'30-In-30' Challenge Week 10 Update

Welcome to the Week 10 weigh-in of the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge that began back on August 1, 2006 as my personal challenge and goal to lose 30 pounds in 30 weeks. Literally hundreds (maybe even thousands!) of people are taking this challenge right now as they seek to lose weight, get healthy and change their lives forever. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved because you ARE making a difference in your life by doing this.

Let me just pause for a moment and personally THANK YOU for your outpouring of love and support for me and my family as we deal with the health complications of my brother Kevin. I still don't know what's going to happen next and the doctors are being very methodical in their response to the news that he has one artery that is 100% clogged and two others that are 90% blocked. Keep praying that a miracle can happen. God bless you.

Well, speaking of Kevin, one of your fellow participants in the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge is struggling right now. She was quite open and honest with me about what she describes as Kevinist-type behavior. With her father weighing a robust 500 pounds with Type 2 diabetes and a sister who is a dietitian weighing in at 300 pounds, she doesn't have very good examples around her to support her low-carb lifestyle. In fact, her family is all stuck on low-calorie/low-fat diets.

Here's what she wrote in her e-mail:

"I am me. I am a sugar addict. I love bread and chocolate. I mean, I REALLY LOVE IT! I know that livin' la vida low carb makes me feel 200% better, yet I've fallen hard lately. Could you give me a motivational blog perhaps to get back on the wagon and go for it? I could use an inspirational story."

Well, that's what I try to do every single time I post a new article at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog. In fact, just today I wrote this blog post to provide some tough love and encouragement for people who have gotten stuck thinking their obesity is caused by an illness or disease (it is NOT, by the way, which is the whole point of my post). There is LOTS of uplifting encouragement in there for people who need to get back on the straight and narrow. Check it out!

How about you? Are you stuck in a rut like your fellow participant? Are you finding it difficult to give up those things you think you can't live without such as bread, sugar and chocolate despite the fact that you know low-carb living is best for you? If so, then you should feel free to share those struggles with us. Click on the comment section below and allow your "30-In-30" buddies cheer you on and lift you up today. That's why we're here, so take advantage of it.

Alrighty now, we're now ten weeks down in this challenge which is one-third of the way in our thirty weeks of low-carb. By this point, you should have lost 10 pounds already (at least!) and well on your way to getting healthier and healthier! Just out of curiosity, I'd LOVE for everyone who is participating and willing to share publicly or anonymously how much weight they have lost since starting the challenge.

Of course, not everyone started on August 1st, but how about we do this. Click on the comment link below and provide the following information:

1. Your name (real or fake) if you want to provide it.
2. When you started "30-In-30."
3. How much weight you have lost.
4. Any comments about your experience so far.

That's easy, isn't it? And it won't take that long. I think if we see how everyone else is doing, then it may spur others to get going with their efforts a little harder. You know, a little friendly competition doesn't hurt. :)

So, I guess I should tell you what my Week 10 was like in terms of weight loss now, eh? I knew you were wondering, so how about I just tell you already.

ANOTHER THREE-POUND WEIGHT LOSS!!!

Oh, I'm so excited that I have now lost an increidible 25 pounds in ten weeks, just five pounds aways from my original goal of 210. But a couple of weeks ago I adjusted my weight loss goal to a challenging, but certainly attainable 199 pounds. There's no doubt in my mind I will make it there and I have 20 more weeks to lose 16 pounds--less than a pound a week!

I had no idea the weight would be coming off again like it has before, but it most certainly is. I'm not complaining because I know it could stall at any moment...and probably will. But will I get discouraged? Heck no, it's just a stall. We all go through the stall while we're having a ball in the Fall walking through the mall trying to avoid hitting the wall. Er, sorry about that, I just felt the need to alliterate a little. :)

Okay, it's your turn now. What was YOUR Week 10 like?

Hi Jimmy and Gang!!!

I started near the middle of August on the 16th. I weighed in at 209 then and today I am a much happier and productive 199!!! I actually started my induction on June 2nd (my b-day) at 235. So I am down a whopping 36 lbs and it feels good.

Sorry to say this is my stall week. I didn't lose a thing. Didn't gain either!!! :-)

This is Kathy in Houston. I joined the challenge in the second week of August to end a stall I've had for a year. Well, it was a stubborn stall, and I got frustrated and tried a higher calorie "weight loss" WOE for two weeks (on the theory that I wasn't eating enough calories and my body was in starvation mode) and GAINED eight pounds! I then went to Kimmers.com and I have lost 8.1 pounds in the last week! So at least I am back where I was before my little side track. I'm hoping that this time next week, I'll have jumped off that plateau!

Jimmy -

I forgot to add - CONGRATULATIONS MY FRIEND!!! Job well done. You are really moving forward in your weight loss. I am really proud of you. I'll have to adjust my diet again and see if I can shake this stall off!!!!

GO MO! Those stalls have to come, but knowing that ahead of time makes it easier to get through. Hang in there because you are bound for the promised land of weight loss. THANKS for your very kind comments.

As for you, Kathy, I cannot tell you how proud I am of what you are doing right now. Kimmer's Kimkins low-carb plan is an amazing program and actually you'll want to read my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog on Wednesday for an exclusive interview I had with Kimmer herself! I think you'll LOVE it! :)

Anyone else have a comment to share?

Started: 8/14/06 - 8 weeks
Lost: 16.5 lbs total, 3 these last two weeks, 88 lbs to go

I have fibromyalgia, and taking the weight off, while thrilling, is secondary to me to feeling better, having more energy and less pain.

Diabetes runs rampant in my family. A grandfather, my dad, a sister, my daughters. My yuoungest sister - always a fragile diabetic - died a few years ago. She was only 30.

My boyfriend died in 2001 due to complications from diabetes. My oldest daughter has been insulin since she was 17 (she is 30 now) and my 21 year old daughter has just been dx'd as Type 2.

I don't know why I have been able to dodge the bullet, and believe me, I've been tested and tested. But at 48, I know I can't keep doing this.

Last year they said I was hypertensive, and I started yet another med.

I've only lost 16.5 lbs, but I've been able to stop taking the med I was taking for hypertension already -- even just this little bit of weight loss helped! I've also stopped taking one of the meds I take for fibro pain.

Needless to say, my GP and my rheumatologist are very pleased. Both have been very supportive of my low-carb changes.

GO VICTORIA! I KNOW you feel so awesome right about now. KEEP IT UP!

I'm Joyce and I started with you that first day in August. I'm down a total of 19 pounds in 10 weeks, and lost 4 last week.

I've tried for 26 years to lose weight and this is the longest I've stayed with it. I still have about 80 more to lose. It almost seems easy -- something finally clicked. But this challenge and the support has helped a lot. My hiking times are improving (and I would love to not be the fattest one out there!)

Hey, we could call ourselves the 'Baggy Pants Club'.

Fantastic job everybody! Thank you Jimmy for the encouraging words.

Make me an honorary member of that "Baggy Pants Club" too! :D

Way to go Vic and Joyce!!!! Vic, I'm so glad you are getting better! I don't want to take any meds either, that's what drives me!!!!

To stay honest, I must report that I'm bouncing around between 228 and 234, now at 230. I added some badly needed exercise to my day with a 20-minute walk this morning. I have gone back to induction, but I'm not quite a strict as I need to be.

I guess you could say I'm in a holding pattern, but my general low-carb diet has not broken down. This is in contrast to my blowout last October (my body seems to want comfort food as the days get colder) when I eat an egg, bacon, and cheese on a roll that set me off till the following March.

In other words, I remain undaunted, even as you others are losing so much. I'm still down from 254 this time (and my all-time high of 262) and I'm not going to let my temporary plateauing get me down, not this time. I feel so much better than I did when I resumed my weight loss last March, I have no intention of giving up.

I started the last week of Aug so it's week 6 for me.
I lost 9.5 pounds but now I am bouncing around but I think it's due to the nuts I am eating. that is the only thing I can think of since I am not cheating!!
Even though I am bouncing I am lucky that I can monitor fat percentage too and that is going down even if the scales aren't.........

Keep it going, Gary and Wanda! FABULOUS WORK even in the hard part of weight loss!

While I had every intention of staring in August, I finally got on the ball two weeks ago, after seeing vacation photos from the week prior. I am happy to say, I am down 5 pounds and I can already feel a difference in my clothes! Woo-hoo! 45 more pounds to go! And Jimmy, the Maine Cottage Foods Sugar Free chocolate bars are INCREDIBLE!!! No side effects like the maltitol bars I've had in the past! Thanks for telling us about them!
Krys

Way to go, Krys! So glad you liked the bars, too!

I fell off the wagon Sunday so I'm not going near a scale right now.

I did "punish" myself with a 5 miles run on the treadmill yesterday, though! Best way to burn off the glycogen and felt great! My soreness today is a good sore. :) I can't do runs like that on low-carb, only when I binge.

Although I wouldn't call it punishing myself, Newbirth, I do the same thing when I have pancakes at Denny's. About THREE hours! LOL! Some out of guilt and some knowing I've got to burn those hundreds of carbs I just ate. Oh the price we pay to live the low-carb life. THANKS for sharing!

oops...so i forgot to weigh in last week...and lets just say i havent been keeping up with my blog...i started a new job so i have been a little busy..
BUT! i AM keeping up with the weightloss...

I'm proud of you, Michelle. Go for THIRTY MORE! :D

oki, my turn to share =)

First i want to congratulate you jimmy to 3 pounds down, and the rest of the gang to those shed pounds! wow!
I started 8/1/06 on 208 and now i weigh 192,7 meaning i´ve lost more than 15 pounds in 10 weeks, YAY!!!

I had a stall but just kept going eating loads off low-carb-food and lost 2 pounds this week :-)

I feel great, i have been getting complimments from people last week that i´m just gettin slimmer =) my bloodsugarlevel is so much better and in control ( thats why i´m on this lifestyle for life! litterally speaking ). I got much more energy, i don´t comforteat, i have lost all cravings for sweets.
The "downside" is that i am shrinking out off my second pair of newly bought jeans. But downsizing is a luxuryproblem ;-)

P.s. My best wishes for Kevin!

SUPER DUPER, Lena! Those new "downsized" jeans are awesome, aren't they?

ANYONE ELSE? :D

Hi. I started about five weeks ago and lost five pounds the first three weeks (total), but now, without going off induction levels of carbs, I seem to have not only not lost, but gained back 1 1/2 pounds! I am getting oh so discouraged. I considered Kimkins, but decided that there's no sense losing weight using an eating plan I'm not willing to follow forever, so, I'm just hanging in, barely. Thansk for your website. It's been great.
Ree in Minnesota

Hey Ree,

Don't get discouraged. Just stick to the basics of low-carb and don't give up. Our bodies are rather quirky sometimes and just know that you are doing better for your body even if that scale is not moving downward. Trust me, it will if you stay focused on eating better--the low-carb way.

HANG IN THERE! :)

Jimmy
