'30-In-30' Challenge Week 11 Update

I'm just gonna get this out of the way right off the bat:

No, that's not a mistake. Yes, I was 215 pounds last week at this time, but today I REALLY DO weigh 225.5 pounds--a weight GAIN of 10 1/2 pounds! HOLY COW!

How can this happen? Did you binge eat in response to your tumultuous week of unpleasant events last week? Was the pain of going through so much at one time even too much for you to bear than you pigged out like nobody's business? Will you ever be able to turn it around now? Doom, gloom, despair...OH MY!

If these are the kinds of thoughts and questions running through your mind, then let me just say one thing to you: SNAP OUT OF IT! LOL! Everything is gonna be alright. Really, it is and I truly believe that. A little weight gain that happens in one week will not determine my overall perspective on how successful I will be in my long-term goals of being skinnier and healthier than I am right now. This is all just a part of the journey that each of us has to go through when we are attempting to make permanent, lasting changes in our lives.

Just in case you are wondering, I did NOT stray from my low-carb plan one bit last week nor did I eat like a madman. The only thing that changed was I stopped eating the more expensive organic eggs since I lost my job and cannot afford them right now (I'll also be dropping the Atkins shakes and some other costlier foods in the coming weeks until financial stability returns). Also, I slacked off on going to the gym for my regular workouts towards the end of the week so I could take some "me" time to reflect on what has happened in my life as of late. But I don't think these minimal changes had anything to do with my weight gain.

Here's what I ate with commentary about each day:

So that's what I ate. It was all low-carb and I resisted any temptation to splurge. There was nothing on that entire menu that I haven't even before in weeks that I have lost weight on my low-carb plan, so the only logical explanation for my weight gain has got to be the added stress.

My friend Dr. Jonny Bowden explains about how stress in your life can release a nasty hormone in your body called cortisol which stimulates your appetite and makes you gain weight in the mid-section. EEEK! You can eat right, exercise, do all the right things and the weight will still come on without the proper management of stress. I'm working on that right now.

Although I believe I have been able to deal with the stress of losing my job, watching my brother go through some very serious health complications, financial issues concerning my house and more, my body knows about all these things and is responding accordingly. There's really nothing I can do about the current state of affairs I am facing.

But right here and right now is really is where the rubber meets the road. Do I get so discouraged because I GAINED over 10 pounds in one week or do I stick with the program knowing it works and that I will eventually succeed? I think you know the answer to that question already. And this is not just about me and my life, but it could be YOUR situation as well.

Do you see a weight gain of 3, 6 or even 10 pounds as a sign that you are failing at your attempts to lose weight? If so, then DON'T DO THAT! We are our own worst enemy when it comes to making changes in our lives, whether it is weight loss or whatever. If our problem with being overweight or obese is EVER going to be addressed, then we need to end this madness of feeling sorry for ourselves and sabotaging our own efforts to improve ourselves. It can and MUST happen!

Here's a thought: I bet nobody else GAINED more than 10 pounds in the "30-In-30" challenge this week! Hee hee! How'd your week go?

Wow Jimmy, I never thought that stress could do that much but now that I think about it,it does!

Just a question, do you actually feel the 10 pounds and are you surprised? I know stupid question but I am curious..........

Hey Wanda,

A wise teacher once said, "The only stupid question is the one not asked." So, no, your question is not stupid but rather a very good one.

When I mentioned to Christine my weight GAIN this morning, she remarked, "But you don't look like you've gained ten pounds." No, I don't. Nor do I feel like it either. It just happened.

I suppose if this is stress-induced weight gain, then it should come back in line once the stress begins to subside. Like I said, I'm not worried, but it does show you how the body can react to changes in our lives, doesn't it?

Mr. Moore, there is another possible and simple explanation. I noticed that you had BBQ several times. Do you happen to know the sodium content of the BBq sauce? Many are quite high. The bbq and the salty pepporoni may have led to water rentention if your body is not used to that level of sodium. Maybe it contributed abit. Sodium intake is much easier to adjust to than stress. You and your wife and brother are in my prayers.

Hi Jimmy,

I agree that cortisol levels may have a play in your one-week weight gain.

But I'm also thinking about the article you posted about the study regarding daily weighing vs. less frequent weighing. One day last week, I was suddenly up by 5 whole pounds. And the very next day, I was down again to my reported low weight of 249. Now, had I been weighing in on a weekly-only basis on the very day I was suddenly up by that 5 pounds, I would have been disappointed in the results for the week. Since I do weigh daily, instead, it was easy to recognize as simply a one-day meaningless blip, likely caused by a little too much sodium over the prior days.

I'm also of a mind that what you do dietarily and activity-wise today does not necessarily show up on the scale (and certainly not in clothing fit) the very next day, but is what you do over cumulative days that has an effect realized several days or even weeks down the road.

Hi Jimmy,

Well, welcome to my world. Water weight gain and stress as well as not eating enough foods in keeping the body satisfied may be contributing factors to weight gain. I've had all three. I don't know what I weigh today, the scales were borrowed by a friend to weigh his plane. Seriously! The are so exact, they put both of them under each wheel and weigh it. So, I don't know today - MYSTERY DATE!!!! I always liked that game!!! Well, Jimmy, I'm still betting on YOU! You will come through this, you have people that care about you!!! I had a little too much to eat yesterday, and that was probably stress related too. I just wanted that second bowl of ice cream (low carb of course). It will even out on another day!!!! You will loose the weight and it will even out for you!

THANKS everyone! Again, I'm not down about this, but I wanted you to know what happened to me. BTW, David, here was my daily weight:

TUESDAY-215
WEDNESDAY-213.5
THURSDAY-218
FRIDAY-219.5
SATURDAY-219
SUNDAY-222.5
MONDAY-224
TUESDAY-225.5

Jimmy, you should create a graph of your weight over time. I'll bet you dollars to ...nuts that the slope will be constant. You lost a lot of weight very fast and now you've returned to the mean. :*)

I'm up 3 pounds from my last weigh-in 2 weeks ago. No biggie.

I'm beginning to wonder if my body just wants to be 145 pounds (+/-). 145.6 this morning.

up 3.5 lbs. TOM though and ate salty foods. Most likely water, no worries...

Having recently gained 8 pounds and lost them again, I can relate to you, Jimmy.

As for the stress, have you tried meditating? I have gotten out of the practice, but need to get back to it. I learned it from a book called Conquest of Mind and I actually have an extra copy. If you would like it, I'll send it to you. The technique involves meditating on a spiritual passage --I use the prayer of St Francis of Assisi, even though I am not particularly religious. The author speaks a great deal about stress, anger, impatience, etc.

Anyway, I know that this is indeed a blip for you. You will probably lose it as fast as you gained it! We're with you!

Whew! So I wasn't the only one who ended up with a gain? Lost 4 last week, then lost 1 more, then gained 4! I did eat out a few times and it's really hard to eat like a saint every day.

Guess I need to listen to Jonny's CDs again!

Hang in there, Jimmy. I know good things are in store for you.

Hi Jimmy,
I am so sorry to hear of your gain and I can really identify. After maintaining my weight for 3 years, my husband got a new job and we moved! With my support system
( friends and church) GONE, I gained 25 pounds the first year!! Every day the scale would go up and I didn't eat differently. Stress does play a role in weight control. Now I am losing again. You will too!
Kay

I find when I don't sleep enough in a night, I tend to gain a little...How have you been sleeping lately?

THANKS again for everyone's concern. I'm not worried, just anxious to drop the weight again. I know it will come.

Happy Low-Carb Taco, yes, other than the one night I noted in my post about being restless over thinking about my brother Kevin, I have been sleeping fine.

I'll be okay. The scale was going down as of this morning--I weighed 224. Everything is gonna be okay! I'm just glad to know what a sudden gain feels like now. :D

This isn't my week to weigh, thankfully, since I carbed-out last week while I was out of town. But I was pleased to find that my smaller "new" slacks still seemed to fit just fine yesterday. I'm tightening up this week on carbs to try and offset last week.

Jimmy, sometimes even one glass less of water per day can make a huge difference. Although I know if it were me I would have freaked!

LOL That's why I only weigh every other week!

BTW, David, here was my daily weight:

TUESDAY-215
WEDNESDAY-213.5
THURSDAY-218
FRIDAY-219.5
SATURDAY-219
SUNDAY-222.5
MONDAY-224
TUESDAY-225.5

Ah ha! So you are a fellow daily weigher! And the sudden increase is even more dramatic when you look at the difference between Wednesday at 213.5 and Tuesday at 225.5, a 12 pound difference in only 6 days. I also note that the gain did not begin in earnest until Thursday which, although your stress has been building over the past couple of weeks, also leads me to point to a somewhat delayed reaction to building cortisol levels.

I'll be okay. The scale was going down as of this morning--I weighed 224. Everything is gonna be okay! I'm just glad to know what a sudden gain feels like now. :D

I'm glad you're not worried about it and not just adding additional stress to your life, particularly right now. It's simply not worth it! Although I always like to see a "confirming" weighing on a subsequent day to confirm new territory or spot a new trend, I'll suggest at this point that yesterday was probably the peak of this blip for you.

I also don't believe that it is possible to gain that much in body fat (average 2 pounds a day) over such a short period of time. Even going completely off plan for a couple of weeks each year when I go on vacation, whatever I gain, as much as 13 pounds once, I quickly and easily lose in a week's time by just going back to plan. Even in spite of the fact I was totally carbing out to the max, eating way beyond my daily caloric expenditure, drinking sugary rum concoctions daily, it was still predominantly water weight gain, not body fat.

Big picture, Jimmy, is that you've been working your challenge for 11 weeks and as of today, you are 16 pounds into it, roughly 50% ahead of original "30-in-30" schedule AND you are still just ahead of track for your revised goal! Now, that's an accomplishment to be very proud of!

-David

THANKS for the perspective, David! While I KNEW all of that already, it's nice to see it in print. :)

Take care!

Jimmy

Jimmy

first of all I hope your job situation gets sorted out soon.

Secondly I really enjoy and am inspired by your writings here. Great stuff.

Thirdly, I do not want to be critical of your diet which has worked, but when I read through it I was struck by all the "products" that you eat. "low carb" or not I am wary of all the puddings / bars / brownies etc that feature in there. Chocolate chip cookie dough might be low carb, but I struggle to see how it is natural or healthy.

If we are talking about a low carb diet surely we should be looking at meat, fish, eggs, fats, cheese, veggies, nuts, fruits, probably in that order. These things are natural....and low carb??

Anyway, don't take that as a big criticism and I hope things work out

THANKS for your comments, Chris, but I've been eating the "products" for a long time with no problems with my weight loss. Go back and look at my menus in recent weeks when I had LOTS of weight loss and you'll see those low-carb bars and chocolates. That's how I do my low-carb lifestyle.

Sure, I also eat those other natural foods as well, but there is nothing wrong in my book with a little bit of indulgence here and there as well. This is a subject I have discussed extensively at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog. I invite you to find those columns and see why I eat the products as well.

THANK YOU again for your comments! They are welcome anytime...even if you do choose to offer some criticism every now and then. :D I'm a big boy, I can take it!

Hi Jimmy, hope things are improving for you.

I would say that you've carb bloat going on rather than any weight gain from stress and cortisol. If you look at previous weeks menus you can see you've really added a lot of fruit and products. Fruit, tortilla wraps, chocolate milk, Atkins shakes, bars and desserts, it all adds up. I bet if you went back to the menu where you lost 6 1/2 pounds you'd lose that much again on water weight alone.

Also, where's the beef? You meat consumption is pretty paltry, especially beef. That's where most of your good protein and fat is going to come from. The money spent on low-carb products can go to better use buying meat, which has more nutrients, fat and protein than Atkins products. And you have to admit, not much "organic" and "natural" about fiber gums, sugar alcohols and various other food colorings and fillers.

Hi Jimmy!

I tried to write earlier this week but somehow my message wouldn´t "stick".
But what i was going to write was that i´m 100% shure that your jobsituation will work out for the best. And i know how stressful it is to be made redundant. It happened to me a few years ago, i found a new job after a few weeks( using my old contacts ;-) ) a job that i´m still at and enjoy! But i did develop diabetes during this stressful period, shortly after strating my new job, so do your best trying to look on the bright side Jimmy!

My weightloss consists of 2/3 of a pound this week. -16 pounds so far and more than halfway! I´m happy with that. =)

Hope next week will be positive for everyone!

THANKS for your encouragement, Lena!

-David

YOU GO BOY!!! Keep up the fantastic job, David. You WILL reach that goal in very short order. THANK YOU for inspiring us all to continued success.

Ok, now it's a race again!

After four weeks of bouncing between 235 and 229 and back and in between, I am 228 this morning.

With no real change in my diet or exercise habits. Go figure. :*)
