'30-In-30' Challenge Week 14 Update

Week 14 has arrived in all of its glory with the "30-in-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge and I'll just start off this week with my results from this past week:

So I gained three pounds this week. That's okay, I know the weight will fluctuate as much as 10 pounds as you get closer to your goal. It happens, so you need to learn how to deal with it. The main thing is to NOT let this discourage you on your way to reaching your ultimate goal. You are doing FANTASTIC and I don't want you to ever forget it.

Screw the scale and think about how you feel. Are you happier and feel better than you ever have in your entire life? GOOD! That's the amazing miracle about weight loss that you can't really explain to people who have never gone through it. The freedom from being trapped inside the body of a fat person is overwhelming. Savor the moment.

It's November now and you know what that means--the most challenging time of the year for someone trying to lose weight is here. More diets have bitten the dust in the time between Halloween and New Year's Day than at any other time of the year. Why do we do that to ourselves? We know Thanksgiving and Christmas is coming at the same time every year, so what's the big deal about these holidays that causes us to want to overeat?

I have a few theories about this:

1. The cold weather

We humans seem to have a built-in survival mechanism that attempts to protect our bodies from being harmed. At the first sign of a cool breeze or frost on the ground, it's as if a switch inside of you is turned on and you can't help but eat, eat, and eat some more. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? You just can't seem to feed yourself fast enough and you don't feel bad about it either...not until January 1, that is! Try to be aware of this trigger and resist the tendency to eat when you are not really hungry.

2. The peer pressure

When you get around a group of people at your work or with your family during the holidays, it is inevitable that you will feel an insatiable desire and need to graze on the seemingly endless amounts of food available to you. Your co-worker or uncle will say something like, "Aw, come on, the holidays only come once a year. Go ahead and enjoy yourself!" Let me tell you from firsthand experience, that is one of the biggest lies you will EVER hear. Don't give in just because of peer pressure. You have come to far to unravel all you have done these past few months over an indulgence you'll forget about come January!

3. The lack of focus

Who among us hasn't gotten so caught up in the thrill of the holidays that you feel a bit detached from reality. While it isn't a constant thing, there is at least one time during this time of the year that you forget about your normal routine and you simply reminisce about the days gone by. There's nothing wrong with doing that unless you are in a perpetual state of mind like this. If so, watch out! You are susceptible to experiencing a lack of focus on what you should be doing and opening yourself up for disaster in your weight loss goals.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of theories for why we overeat during the holidays, but it's a good place to start the wheels turning in your own mind about why this happens. If you have anything along these lines you would like to share with us, then please impart your wisdom and experience to this conversation. WE WILL MAKE IT THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS! Don't give up on it and you will feel so incredibly relieved come January when everybody and their momma will be wanting to go on a diet! You'll be one step ahead of them at that point! :P

Talk about YOUR Week 14 and share it with all of us. How's it going?

Hi everyone,

WEEK 10 for me.........

Well I stayed the same this week.hmmmmmm stupid scales!! I did lose .3 percentage of body fat but I was hoping to be down more then what I am.
I am still doing good, not cheating and such but I have to get back on my focus and bear down.
I am finding with my clothes and people asking me what I am doing, I am almost giving myself permission to slack off. NOT that I am but I can see it coming if I don't be careful. One of mistakes a couple years ago that I made and went off of low carb.
I made it through Thanksgiving here in Canada with no problem but now the "party" time is coming up.
The hardest thing that I find is trying to explain to people that I don't eat sugar and I won't cheat.....they find it hard to figure that out that "only a little" is not happening where I am concerned.

Ohhhhhhhhh the problems of a low carber!LOL!

Wanda

Jimmy your voice of reason seems to come at the best times for me..when I need a kick the most.
Thanks Bud.

That's why I'm here, Wanda! STAY STRONG!!!

I"m glad I'm not the only one who gained this week.

What happens with my weight seems so sporadic.

I was losing last week, nearly 1/2 a pound per day for a couple of days. Then all of a sudden I got on the scales yesterday and had bounced back up to last Monday's weight, which was actually 2 lbs heavier than I was on Friday. Today I was up an additional half pound, which put me a half pound heavier than what I was a week ago.

I'm not anywhere near my goal, so that can't be the problem.

I'm not at all interested in eating holiday season type junk, so that can't be what it is either. Unless I'm absorbing carbs by osmosis, simply by putting them in my grocery cart at my husband's request! ;-)

But seriously, my carb count has stayed in the mid-20's... Except this is very odd... I started *gaining* after my daily carb count dropped down in the teens over the weekend. Could I possibly be stalling myself by not eating *enough* carbs?!

Week 12 for me. Lost 1 pound this week! Down to 144.2.

I have a planned cheat on Friday so I expect I will show a gain next week.

CONGRATS, Newbirth! Sometimes the scale will surprise you even on the planned cheats. Here's hoping for you.

Calianna, it certainly couldn't hurt for you to up your carb count to 20g and see what happens. Let me know, okay? :)

Oh it wasn't intentional to have such low carb counts those days, sometimes it just happens that way. I guess I'm just not planning it out in advance very well, because I occasionally get to the end of the day, haven't had many carbs for one reason or another, and I'm not hungry, so I don't bother eating anything else that day.

Most days, I've had somewhere in the mid-20's though, and occasionally somewhere in the 30-35 range.

There just doesn't really seem to be any rhyme or reason to when I lose and when I gain. My weight can go either way, quite independent of daily carb totals, judging by the records I've kept.

Yah, I want to say the scale is stupid because it went up 3 pounds at my house too. Maybe there is some atmospheric magnetic force at work. :) I made some low carb treats to practice for the holidays. I used to really enjoy baking during the holidays.

My toughest day of the week is Sunday. I like kicking back, reading the paper and having something to eat. I usually think of bread or potato chips. I did have a tasty lunch on Saturday: Tuna patties with cheese. So I guess I should plan to make something I really like for Sunday lunch and dinner.

But my morning blood sugar is staying under 109 which could be better, but not as bad as it used to be.

We Fats lost focus, fell off the diet, but are back and ready to continue the battle. Reading your stuff brought me back to what needs to be done. Keep up the fight! Mrs Fat says hi!

Welcome back to the promised land, Mr. Fat. We're so glad you're getting back at it again and encourage you to keep checking back here for more encouragement and advice to stay on track. Tell the Mrs. we said hello!

I'm down now to 255 -- that's amazing to me. I am finding that fat counts as well as carbs, and still doing Kimkins. I lose a pound or two every few days as long as I don't cheat!

Another pound lost. Averaging something less than a half pound a week now. Nice slow and steady weightloss.

Challenge stats:

Began 8/25/2006, 260 pounds, 11 weeks into challege

13 pounds lost

20 pounds to short-term non-obesity goal of 227

11 pounds into new territory, 73 overall pounds lost doing low-carb.
