'30-In-30' Challenge Week 21 Update
We've now entered the home stretch (only single-digit weeks are left!) in this weight loss endeavor and again let me express to you how very proud I am of your commitment and dedication to improving your weight and health. You all inspire and motivate me in ways I could never adequately tell you. Suffice it to say, I'm thrilled beyond comprehension at how lives are being changed for the better.
So, did you have a great Christmas? It's unfortunate that some people get so worked up about Christmas that they stress themselves out to the point that they NEVER enjoy it. Wassup with that? Christmas is supposed to be joyous and magical--anything else ISN'T Christmas!
But, I realize today is the beginning of the letdown for a lot of folks. We have all this big buildup of emotions and expectations leading up to Christmas Day. Yet, December 26th rolls around and...POOF! It's all gone. As the song from the early 90s said, "Back to life, back to reality." 8-O HOW TRUE, HOW TRUE!
Some people will attempt to drown out their sorrows with alcohol, others with drugs. But the mind-numbing, pain relieving choice of millions more is the sedating effect that comes from stuffing your mouth full of big chunks of sugary, high-carb comfort foods. We've all done it, too!
Grabbing a great big bowl and scooping out about a gallon of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, smothered and covered with Hershey's syrup, gooey caramel, crushed-up Oreo Cookies, those Rainbow sprinkle thingys, lots of whipped cream, and don't forget the cherry on top! Sound familiar anyone?
The truth is we ALL get down in the dumps whether it's after Christmas, following the loss of a loved one, losing your job, going through a difficult circumstance in your marriage...I think you get the picture. Sorrow and hurt are all around us, but how do we keep from turning to food when life seems to be unraveling?
While food is certainly a better choice than alcohol or drugs, there are better ways to deal with stress than mouthfuls of what amounts to nothing more than garbage for you. When I weighed over 400 pounds before 2004, I cared as much about what I ate as Ebenezer Scrooge does about celebrating Christmas. It just didn't matter to me.
Yet, like Scrooge, I caught a glimpse of my past, present, and future that made me realize what I was doing was wrong and that the time to change was NOW! That "now" came on January 1, 2004 when I started the Atkins diet in earnest. This wasn't just going to be a short-term fix to my problem and I realized that even then. The whole idea of "lifestyle change" began to sink in.
If I was going to succeed, then it was going to take a full-fledged, 100% dedicated effort until the job was done (and it's NEVER done!). And so I started finding other ways to deal with disappointment and down times. Working out at the gym, writing and blogging (see, you're helping me relieve my stress!), helping people who e-mail me about low-carb and weight loss, spending time playing games and watching movies with my wife, and so much more! In other words, ANYTHING but eating what I shouldn't!
By the next New Year's in 2005, I was 180 pounds lighter and I've never been the same again! On January 1, 2007, I will mark keeping my weight off for two years on my way to forever and ever. WOO HOO! Starting "30-In-30" was my way of helping keep myself accountable while encouraging others to do so as well.
While it has been an up and down ride for me in this specific challenge, I'm not at all discouraged because I am keeping the weight off. Think about it--THAT is HUGE! When you realize all those people who have lost as much weight as I have and then gain it back within six months to a year, the fact that I've kept the weight off for as long as I have is a major accomplishment. Low-carb is a long-term solution!
But I'm not satisfied with just settling for the weight I am at. I want to weigh less and I will. One step at a time and one day at a time sweet Jesus! :) Every day that I keep my focus on my weight and health is an investment in my future that pays dividends to me now and in the future. There's no doubt about it.
Here's my current "30-In-30" weight loss tracker:

Although I gained two pounds this week, I am still 18 pounds below my starting weight at the beginning of the challenge. Sure, it's a little frustrating to me for the weight to remain so static bouncing up and down between 215-225, but I'm most certainly NOT worried about it. Add my 180-pound weight loss in 2004 to the mix and I've lost a grand total of 188 pounds. Do you know anyone who wouldn't take that? :)
How was YOUR Christmas? Did you survive being around all that food? New Year's is coming and I expect many more people will be joining in on the challenge over the next few weeks. This week would be an EXCELLENT opportunity for you to leave a comment sharing about your progress and encouraging others to give it a try.
People are looking for hope and inspiration. So let's give it to 'em! THANK YOU!

I'ts Blog-Tag and YOU'RE NOW IT! :)
Thanks to my blogging friend Suzique from the "Waisted In The Wasteland" blog as well as the "Low-Carb Lab" blog (who I recently named one of the Top 10 Low-Carb Bloggers of 2006 on my podcast show), I am now officially a part of an active game of blog-tag! Since it's Christmas weekend and I'm game for having a bit of fun, I'll gladly take Suzique up on this.
Here's how it works:
1. Come up with 5 little-known facts about yourself
2. Post a blog with those nuggets of truth
3. "Tag" others to join in the fun
So, here's my chance to reveal some deep dark secrets about Jimmy Moore. HA, as if! No, I don't have too many things you DON'T know about me because my blog is a virtual open book into my life and gladly so. If it's helping people change their lives by permanently losing weight, then my mission has been accomplished.
Okay, so what can I share with you about me? Hmmm...
1. I had perfect attendance in school from 7th-12th grade. Not one sniffle, cough, fever, sneeze, or puke. TMI, I know, but I didn't get sick. Achoo! At least not enough to stay home from school. Yes, I was a nerd! Go figure that one!
2. I graduated college in three years. Less than a month after graduating high school in 1989 just a few months after my 17th birthday, I stepped on to the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin to begin my college experience right away. Again, I was a NERD, so I craved knowledge (and still do!). Taking a full load of classes (22 hours of classes in one semester!) and working as much as 70 hours a week in various restaurant jobs straight through, including summers, until May 1992, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and English (yes, a DOUBLE major) at the ripe old age of 20. I was the youngest graduate in my class and didn't have a single dime of debt because I worked my own way through. My mom was so proud because I was the first person in our family with a college degree (my sister Beverly would become the second one just three years later!).
3. When I was in the 8th grade, my advanced English teacher announced the annual school poetry contest to the class. As soon as I heard about this, my mind kicked into high gear as she began lecturing that day on Shakespeare or something. Within 15 minutes I had finished the rough draft of my poem and by the end of that class, I turned in the polished version of my poem entitled "The Cheetah." Guess what? That poem not only won a prize, it was named the GRAND PRIZE winner as the BEST POEM in the entire school that year!
I remember it well because I got to attend the district poetry contest dinner with my mom where for the very first time I got to try filet mignon. I didn't know bacon wrapped around a slab of steak could taste so good, but it did! No, I didn't win anything at that competition, but I never forgot the experience.
Incidentally, my 8th grade English teacher wasn't impressed with my writing skills. She recommended that I be placed in a regular English class when I got to high school. UGH! I was so bored in that class that the teacher (Ms. Huhn) asked me if I would like to be in her advanced English class. Um, do pigs like wallowing in mud? You bet your sweet bippy! I remained in advanced English classes throughout high school and then got a degree in English with a 3.9 GPA in college. Do you think I was out to prove a point with that 8th grade English teacher? That old hag didn't know who she was messing with. :D
4. I've been through seven marriages. Yep, it's been quite an experience in life with all the weddings and divorces. What's that? Oh no, silly, NOT ME! I'm talking about my parents. Ah, yes, I grew up in the typical "dysfunctional family unit" that the media loves to talk about so much. Let's see if I can track for you those seven marriages I have been through in the course of my life.
My mom and dad got married one month before they were supposed to graduate high school (#1), but then divorced when I was less than 2 years old. They both then remarried to different people. My mom's second husband Jerry (#2) raised Kevin and me as well as his daughter (my half-sister) Beverly for most of our childhood. Meanwhile, my dad's second wife Dora (#3) had a son (my half-brother) Nathan who went on to be one of my inspirations for starting the Atkins diet after his success on it in the late 1990s. Less than 10 years after their second marriages, both my mom and dad had divorced their spouses. Are you still with me?
A few years of experimenting with new potential mates, they both landed new ones--Faye (#4) for my dad and Frank (#5) for my mom. Frank got upset about something and divorced my mother, but then came back to her (#6) wanting a second chance which she gave him. I'm happy to announce that both my mother and father have now been married for over 20 years to their current spouses which is longer than any of their previous marriages lasted combined. WOO HOO!
What about marriage #7, you ask? Well, that's the one and only marriage that I'll EVER have in my life with the beautiful and lovely Christine. We are in our 12th year of wedded bliss and have no intentions of letting the "d" word come into our vocabulary. In fact, when we got married, I told her that I had seen enough divorce in my life that it will not be an option and we cut that word completely out of every dictionary we own. So far, so good!
5. And finally, in honor of Suzique who "tagged" me for this game, let me tell you what happened when my family went to the Mardi Gras in Nawlins' (that's New Orleans for those of you who don't speak Southern!) when I was about 7 years old. We were up on a tall ledge as the floats were coming by with beads, coins, rubber snakes, and more flying through the air. If you've ever been to the Mardi Gras, then you know what I'm talking about.
I was watching all this stuff flying over our heads where a gathering of kids my age were scooping up all the good stuff. My mom said I could go down there as long as I stayed behind where they were. So I enthusiastically ran down there and was making out like gangbusters. I even got a rubber snake! COOL!
When the parade slowed down a bit, I looked up and didn't see my mom. Where'd she go? So, I looked around and nothing was familiar to me. In my quest for gathering up the good stuff that went over the heads of the people on the high rise, I had apparently lost where my family was. What does a 7-year old do when he loses his mommy? You guessed it--I started bawling like a baby! WAH WAH WAH!
But, even at that age, I had the presence of mind to go to the only person I could trust at the time to help me out--the police. We were staying with a New Orleans police officer and I immediately recognized the uniform when I saw a man directing traffic. I went up to him, tugged on his shirt, and said, "Mister, I want my mommy." He dispatched a police car to come pick me up (I thought I was being arrested!) and they took me down to the station.
While I was there, I told them about the man we were staying with who they recognized from my description and they immediately contacted him. He was able to get in touch with my mom so she could come pick me up. In the meantime, the officers at the station were super-nice to me, fed me lunch and let me look around the place. This was way more fun than the Mardi Gras was...until my mom arrived.
I can still see the look on her face to this day (I have nightmares about it sometimes--hee hee!) as she walked up to me saying, "I don't know if I should hug you or whip you, so I guess I'll just hug you for now." That was the best mommy hug I ever got! And this experience makes for a great story to tell some 30 years later.
That's it, no more revealing secrets about ME! But now it's YOUR turn. If you read through this post about me, then consider yourself "tagged" if you are a blogger (and even if you don't have a blog, this gives you a reason to START one!). It's kinda fun when you think about all the things that your readers may not know about you. Believe me, there was a LOT more I could have written on my list.
So what about you? If you decide to play, then let me know! Send me the URL to your post and I'll put it here. This was so much FUN, so give it a try.
TAG, YOU'RE "IT"!!!
12-23-06 UPDATE: Apparently, blog-tagging is chic these days. Check out this Salinas, CA-based KSBW column by staff writer Rick Ellis. He gets in on the action and even reveals the genesis of the explosion in popularity of blog-tag came when Jeff Pulver started this thing about two weeks ago! Again, if you read my blog, then consider yourself tagged. E-mail me at livinlowcarbman@charter.net if you play the game! Don't forget to tag others in your post. :D
12-23-06 UPDATE: My regular reader Calianna decided to play along with the blog-tag game today at her "Calianna's Cottage" blog. THANKS for joining in on the fun and opening yourself up a bit in the process. Anyone wanna join me and Calianna in blog-tag? You're gonna LOVE it!
12-23-06 UPDATE: Now Wanda has gotten in on the action. So you liked the idea, EH Wanda? Hockey, really? I can't get into that sport too much, but I suppose it's more of a Canadian thing than American. THANKS for playing along. Isn't this a neat idea? :D

'30-In-30' Challenge Week 20 Update

I'm back to 220 pounds again after a 3-pound GAIN this week
It's TERRIFIC TUESDAY again here in Week 20 of The "30-In-30" Weight Loss Challenge as we are almost through one of the toughest times of the year to keep your weight from going up, up, up! You have LESS THAN A WEEK LEFT to survive the Christmas 2006 temptation season before the new year comes to rescue you from holiday bliss. YOU CAN DO IT!
With two-thirds of "30-In-30" behind us now, it's time to make that big push in the final 10 weeks to reach your goal. If you are lagging behind the pace, then it's time to step it up a notch or two. As it stands right now, I am EXACTLY on track with my original goal of one pound a week for the first twenty weeks.
But my weight has been doing some fluky things lately that are completely unexplainable from a dietary perspective. Does that frustrate you? You have been doing everything exactly right in your low-carb lifestyle, you haven't cheated a bit, you're exercising just as much as you always have, and yet the weight keeps bouncing up and down like a beach ball!
UGH UGH UGH! What the *$@ is going on?!?!
LOL! Actually, that's exactly how I used to feel before I started my low-carb lifestyle. It was all about living in the moment for me and allowing my present circumstances to dictate my attitude about my success or failure on my "diet." Oh, I've been so "bad" today, so I might as well just give up!
Do I REALLY need to tell you how dopey that is?!
Seriously, I was just talking with a respected controlled-carb advocate today about the qualities of people who have been able to successfully lose weight and keep it off forever. It's amazing how people like this are able to do so well and not fall prey to the notion that losing weight is some mystical impossibility.
Here are just 5 ways these people are different:
1. They are unfazed by any "sudden" jump in weight
2. They don't worry about "messing up" on their diet
3. They get right back on plan after indulging
4. They are laser-focused on what they need to do
5. They enjoy life more than they ever have before
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it does give you a brief look at what sets apart the successful from the not-so-successful when it comes to weight loss. It all comes down to being strong mentally more so than physically. That sounds so backwards, but it is true.
And the great thing is the stronger you get mentally, the more confident you will become to keep at it for the rest of your life. This translates into a dogged determination to NEVER EVER GIVE UP no matter how hard the situation might seem. Just when you are thinking of giving up is exactly when your next breakthrough is about to happen. Are you going to rob yourself of the joy of experiencing that?
Long-term success doesn't just happen and it's NEVER instantaneous. Day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month, and year-by-year, you do what you know you need to do and then keep doing it and doing it and doing it because you know you are living healthier than you ever have in your entire life.
There is a very fine line between healthy and unhealthy living which means virtually everyone can make the switch. It took some time for this former morbidly obese slob to figure out those lessons, but look at me now. I'm emboldened and empowered by the truth that I CAN maintain and even lose weight now whereas in the past it all seemed so hopeless and futile. NOT ANYMORE!
When fretting over food is no longer a regular part of your life anymore, then you know you have made the transition from a person who struggles with weight to one who has risen triumphant at last over a lifetime of pain and anguish about how fat you are and will always be.
Stop thinking like a fat person and view yourself as the fit and fabulous person you've always dreamed about. That person is in there just SCREAMING to come out!
Getting over this mental obstacle, especially after reaching your goal weight, is the golden step to many years of weight loss success. Even the newly crowned winner of "The Biggest Loser" Erik Chopin admitted in a recent interview that he STILL feels like that 407-pound guy he was earlier this year despite losing 214 pounds in about nine months. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!
This just goes to show you that it's not enough to just lose the weight, but to make healthy living a lifestyle choice that you WANT to do forever and ever. Change the mental is a positive way and the physical will follow. Even if your weight has a few ups and downs along the way. :)
How was your Week 20? Are you doing well during the grueling Christmas feasts that are everywhere around you? Do you have any comments to share about what I discussed today? Please share your thoughts with us!
Also, we WILL be here next Tuesday on the day after Christmas to weigh in for Week 21, so don't think you'll get a pass next week. :D YOU'RE GONNA DO GREAT!!!
I'd like to wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS and to let you know how very proud I am of you for sticking to your low-carb lifestyle for nearly THREE MONTHS now! WOW! I stand in awe of what you have been able to do and cheer you on to great success in these final ten weeks. KEEP IT UP and NEVER LOSE HOPE! I love you all!

'30-In-30' Challenge Week 19 Update

Maintaining a steady weight better than the alternative
It's Week 19 of The "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge and I checked in with a 1-pound weight gain this week putting me at 217 pounds. Back and forth, up and down, my weight just refuses to break that 215 barrier for some odd reason or another.
Actually it DID break 215 late last week when I weighed 214 on my Friday morning weigh-in. But the weight came back up by the time I stepped on the scale today. ARGH!
Of course, this doesn't bother me as much since I started using the "Google 15" tool which gives a better representation of where your weight loss actually stands. But at some point I will need to break that 215 if I am ever going to reach my goal of 199. Now I've only got 11 weeks left to lose that last 18 pounds. It's not impossible, but getting more challenging.
This whole thought process about being stuck on a particular weight got me to thinking today (I know, that's dangerous!).
Why do we kick, scream and beat ourselves up when the scale remains on one particular number? Mine right now is 215, but I can remember being "stuck" on 310 for the longest time during my original low-carb weight loss. It was so frustrating for me because the first 100 pounds dropped in no time and I was so close to getting below 300.
For a total of TEN WEEKS, my weight would NOT budge one bit no matter what I did. Did I throw my hands up in the air and give up? Um, I wouldn't be here today if I did and I'd very likely be weighing over 400, maybe even 500 pounds by now.
What's up with that kind of attitude just because the weight loss stops happening for a few weeks or months? Check this out--if the weight is not going down, the optimistic way of looking at your situation is to celebrate that it's NOT going UP! Gee, imagine that! We too often criticize ourselves and want to find fault in what we are doing WRONG that we hardly spend a single moment patting ourselves on the back for what we are doing RIGHT!
Is your weight today at the same point or lower than it was than the day you started "30-In-30"? WOO HOO, YIP YIP YIPPEE, COWABUNGA DUDE! Celebration time, baby! Say what? That's right, even if you haven't lost a single pound on this challenge, you have reason to party. Why? Because at least the scale is NOT moving in the other direction like it had for far too long before. How else did you get in the mess where you need to lose weight in the first place?
See, it's all just a matter of perspective and never losing sight of that. Am I disappointed I'm stuck on 215? Sure. But I'm thinking to myself how much better 215 is than 240 was when I started on August 1st or 410 was when I first began my low-carb lifestyle on January 1, 2004. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you've failed when you are still in the midst of your coming success. Your breakthrough weight loss is imminent, so keep yourself prepared for when it comes.
With less than two weeks to go until Christmas, how are you holding up to the pressures and temptations of the holiday party season? Stay strong because you'll breeze into the final weeks of the "30-In-30" Weight Loss Challenge come January. Keep your head in the game and don't lose your focus. YOU CAN DO THIS!
Share how your week was and any advice you may have for when the scale stops moving.

Perhaps I left a blog off my top 10 list that you felt was worthy of mention. No problem! Leave your comments about Episode 8 at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. You'll have the opportunity to share your thoughts and give some exposure to those low-carb blogs that merit recognition. Did I miss a low-carb blog that should have been named to the best of 2006? Jimmy Moore Honored By FOXNews.com As A Top Health Blogger

FOXNews.com praises my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog
I am pleased to tell you about something pretty doggone neat that happened this week regarding my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog that is so exciting to me. The Managing Editor of Health News at FOXNews.com has named it among his favorite Top 10 health web sites on the Internet today. Check out the story for yourself by reading "Best Blogs: 10 Health Web Sites Worth a Click."
Dr. Manny Alvarez, who also regularly appears as a regular medical contributor on the FOX News Channel, acknowledged the rise of health blogs in 2006 as a growing media trend that is seeking to "penetrate the fabric of modern society."
"Blogs have supplemented the current media and are no longer just the online journals and political punditry many still perceive them to be," Dr. Alvarez wrote. "They can be about anything or nothing at all, but the blogs that create the biggest media impact or generate the greatest readership typically focus on a particular subject or field of study."
In the realm of health blogging, Dr. Alvarez said just about everyone involved in the industry is creating a blog to connect with an audience of people looking for quality news and information on a variety of health-related subjects.
With that said, he wanted to identify those "good health weblogs" by highlighting the ones that are "the most useful and informative." I recognized a few of them from my previous encounters--namely Diet Blog and Diabetes Mine. But imagine my look of utter amazement when I noticed Dr. Alvarez also chose to list my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" in his ten best list! WHOA!
Here's what he wrote about my blog:
"There are many who still follow Dr. Atkins' treatise on the low carb lifestyle, as evidenced by the cleverly titled Livin' La Vida Low Carb. Weight loss stories, recipes, and low carb products are featured on this blog by Jimmy Moore, who speaks from personal experience having lost 180 pounds in 2004.
WOWsers! That's totally awesome, man! I had no idea about this until it was published late Monday afternoon. What a thrill to be named among that group of fine health blogs and I can only say THANK YOU to all of you for helping me spread the word about what I do at all of my blogs including "30-In-30" each and every day and for constantly supporting the work that I do.
I can honestly say that I really do LOVE blogging about weight loss, providing motivation and hope to those who struggle with their weight, and so much more within the context of low-carb living as I seek to encourage, educate and inspire a nation that desperately needs to bring this obesity epidemic under control. Sure, my passion for doing this was birthed out of my nearly 200-pound weight loss, but now it's about giving others the thrill of knowing that THEY can do it, too.
Dr. Alvarez confirms what so many of us in the blogsophere already know--blogs are an excellent place for information and getting together as a community. Especially those of us following the low-carb lifestyle, having a place of support and refuge to come to in a world that scorns our way of eating is like a cool drink in the middle of a hot desert. We can share in each other's experiences to help grow our knowledge and understanding of life without being shouted down for our beliefs.
I like how Dr. Alvarez put it:
"[Health blogs] can help point you in the right direction and provide a valuable resource in your journey to good health."
That's my goal every single time I post another blog column, which is currently over 1,400 articles and nearly three-quarters of a million pageviews just since April 2005 at "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb." Whew, I've been a busy man along with "30-In-30" since August, but I wouldn't trade a minute of the thousands of hours of time I have invested in it for anything else (not even a tummy tuck! LOL!).
YOU make what I do all worth it, so don't you ever go away. In fact, tell someone you know who could stand to read something positive about low-carb about the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" and "30-In-30" blogs this week. THANK YOU again for your support! God bless you all and keep on livin' la vida low-carb!
Please send Dr. Manny Alvarez an e-mail of THANKS for featuring my blog in his Top 10 list by writing to him at webmaster@askdrmanny.com. It would mean a lot to me for my readers to praise him for being willing and brave enough to promote a low-carb blog in a day and age when this nutritional approach is still so publicly ridiculed and maligned. Dr. Alvarez needs to know how much we appreciate his integrity in the face of certain criticism for making this choice.
Friend and passionate defender of livin' la vida low-carb Jackie Eberstein was kind enough to write the following e-mail of thanks to Dr. Manny Alvarez earlier this week for naming my site among the best health blogs on the Internet. I appreciate her very kind words about me and my blog and wanted to publicly offer my gratitude to her for sharing her comments with Dr. Alvarez.
Thanks for bringing attention to Jimmy Moore's blog. Many are doing low carb regardless of the media representation to the contrary. With the immense drain on our economy that obesity and diabetes will continue to impart more choices need to be available to people who wish to take control of their health. The truth about Atkins and low carb needs a voice.
Too many consumers are unaware of the influences special interests such as food and drug companies have on our policy makers. There is research supporting the safety and benefits of a low carb lifestyle and more will be forthcoming. Yet this is not being brought to the attention of the public. I know that JImmy will continue to do so.
Those of us who have experience in clinical practice with the many benefits of low carb will support him.
Thanks,
Jacqueline Eberstein, R.N., co-author "Atkins Diabetes Revolution"
Again, THANK YOU, Jackie! What an honor to have your respect for what I do.
Also, my high school friend and cooking blogger Laura Creekmore from the "Fixin' Supper" blog made mention of "the coolest news ever" regarding my "well-deserved" listing among the top health blogs at FOXNews.com today. THANKS so much, Laura!

'30-In-30' Challenge Week 18 Update
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who has stuck with this since we first began on August 1 as well as to all of you who have joined us since. You know my motto--"It's NEVER too late to start losing weight!" I'm so very proud of each and every one of you because you have chosen to actively improve your health rather than continue to wallow in your obesity putting your future at risk. It's a BOLD step on your part and you should continually congratulate yourself for changing your ways.

"Breadless Mrs. B" started a great Thanksgiving tradition this year
I'm so proud of one my fellow "30-In-30" participants for something she did on Thanksgiving Day of all days! She refers to herself as Breadless Mrs. B because she started on the low-carb lifestyle after allowing her weight to soar above 250 pounds from eating too much bread. She still loves bread, but has chosen to give it up for good because, in her words, it "made me fat."
Mrs. B is currently down to 188.5, just about 10 pounds from her goal weight, and she decided along with her husband to run in a 6K on Thanksgiving morning. Well, run may be an ambiguous term. How about a slow jog or a brisk walk? Regardless of what you call it, I was impressed.
"My goal was to jog the first mile, and then walk the rest. But I felt pretty good after the first mile, and so I told my husband jogging beside me that I'd try running the first two miles, and then walk. Well, turns out this race only had a mile-marker at the first mile, and then nothing. I kept looking for the second mile-marker, but it was no where to be found. Soon we realized that we were nearing the end of the race, and so I figured I might as well just try to jog the whole thing! And finish, I did - it was the farthest and longest I had ever jogged."
YOU GO GIRL! That is the kind of changes that I'm talking about when you are able to lose weight for good. It's an amazing feeling to start doing things that you didn't even know your body could do. The pleasure that comes from that far outweighs any thrill that eating chocolate cake used to give me. Low-carb living and the resulting weight loss is one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my entire life and I continually seek to find new ways to discover that on a daily basis.
At the end of the race, Mrs. B was proud of herself for good reason.
"I finished without stopping to walk, and I'm proud of myself. And running that 6K gave me all the justification in the world for eating as much green bean casserole I could handle!"
LOL! You go girl! You deserve it for what you were able to do. Keep on inspiring everyone as you close in on those last 10 pounds. YOU CAN DO IT!
Okay, did you hear about how my past week has been? If you listened to this week's Episode #7 of my podcast show, then you know I've been as sick as sick can be with a nasty head cold. Today I am FINALLY starting to feel well enough again to join the living world. It's been pretty rough.
And, as I noted in my podcast, I have eaten more food than I normally would this week, although you'll be glad to hear I did not use it as an excuse to cheat on my low-carb plan. I stuck with low-carb foods for the entire week. But not being able to go to the gym to exercise was a real drag. Today will be the first time I've been back at the gym in over a week, so I'm itching to get that started again.
So how did this week from sickness Hell impact my weight?

Can you believe I actually LOST 1/2 POUND! WOW! I didn't expect that since I was up as much as 7 pounds late last week in the first few days of my cold. But, the body has a way of regulating itself and bringing everything back into line again. Of course, using the new Google 15 weight loss tool has helped me keep the proper perspective as well. It a much more accurate snapshot of how you are doing on low-carb progress than the rollercoaster ride your weight can do.
And as we enter the next four weeks with all that food staring you right in the face, what are YOU doing to resist the temptation to nibble even a little? If you do, then prepare to suffer the consequences in your weight. It's just a cold hard fact that you cannot ignore. Feel free to share your tips with everyone about how you are able to survive the Christmas holidays.
Week 18 is in the bag now, so what's happening with you? Tell us...

The LLVLC Show #7: Sickness And Stress Puts Your Low-Carb Plan To The Test
This week's episode is very personal because I recorded it while experiencing the seventh day of symptoms of one of the most grueling head colds I have ever had. This past week has been horrendous for me with sniffling, sneezing, hacking cough, fever, congestion, and an overall rotten feeling. Actually, it royally sucks (wanna know how I REALLY feel?). So, what better opportunity to talk about remaining committed to your low-carb plan even when you are sick or stressed? I think you'll enjoy my perspective on this subject matter this week.
Share your tips and stories about how you deal with being sick or stressed while livin' la vida low-carb by leaving a comment at the official web site for the show. We've all thrown our hands up in the air and given in to those "comfort foods" we thought we needed to get through it, but I'd be interested in hearing from people who have overcome and triumphed. Did you feel better knowing you didn't throw in the towel on your low-carb diet? Share, share, share! :)
In case you missed it, here are the ways you can listen to my podcast:

'The Google 15' Weight Loss Tool Is Perfect For 30-In-30 Participants

"The Google 15" lets you accurately track your weight loss
I'm all for using anything to help you feel confident about reaching your weight loss goals. Whether it is creating a big poster of the pounds coming off of your body or keeping a journal of your carbs, exercise and water intake daily, these are tools that will help you become the eventual weight loss success that you have dreamed about ever since starting the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge.
There's a relatively new online weight loss tool that I found while surfing the Internet and it's actually pretty neat, too. It's a Google Module from Google software engineer Brian W. Fitzpatrick (aka Fitz) called "The Google 15." When newbie techno-nerds first start out working for Google, the common belief is they generally gain at least 15 pounds from all the free food at their fingertips compliments of the great Google empire (Google denies this is true, but it makes for a good story).
As a result, Fitz wanted to provide a tool that would help encourage people to track their weight loss. Thus was born "The Google 15."
Unlike traditional trackers which go up and down fluctuating and frustrating even the most devoted dieters, "The Google 15" implores a moving average so it is much more realistic about how you are doing by seeing the trend from the previous two weeks. You weigh yourself at the same time every single day (preferably in the morning) and input your weight online.
While those of us who have lost weight can attest to the thrill of seeing the scale drop several pounds in one day, we've also been hit with the dreaded several pound weight GAIN in one day as well. Too many people start kicking and screaming when this happens and they allow that scale to dictate their attitude about their weight loss.
That's where "The Google 15" comes in.
Looking at the most current trend of your weight loss as you move towards your goal weight, this tool will help you see exactly where you have been, where you are, and where you are going. Most people who are eating right and exercising will benefit from knowing they are doing very well despite a few bumps every once in a while with the scale. It's not a reason to give up on losing weight like so many people do.
Within a week of submitting your daily weight information, you will start seeing a graph of your progress that will compute how much weight you have lost or gained over the past week as well as how much further you are from your goal weight. This can be an invaluable tool for you to use if the constant ups and downs freak you out. "The Google 15" brings it all down to a mathematical equation that equals ultimate success.
Then, even after you hit your weight loss goal, Fitz encourages people to keep using "The Google 15" to serve as an "early warning if you start to pack on the pounds!" What a great idea and it will keep you accountable even if nobody else is watching.
Wanna take advantage of this exciting new weight loss tool? Click on the "Add to Google" button below (or CLICK HERE) and "The Google 15" will automatically show up when you visit Google.
Don't be concerned about your information being stored anywhere because it uses Google's public Homepage API and simply stores your daily weights and your goal weight in your preferences. However, if you are using a shared computer like at the library, then disable cookies before exiting and nobody will have access to your information.
If you have any comments or questions about "The Google 15," then just e-mail Fitz.
