My Wife Christine Has Quietly Lost 13 Pounds On Atkins Without Trying

Hey and welcome to the blog that celebrates low-carb weight loss success one pound at a time--it's the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge! I'm glad you decided to come here today and I wish you GREAT SUCCESS as you begin or continue down this journey to better health for yourself! Feel free to post your comments whether you are doing well or even not-so-good. Either way, we're here for you!

Someone rather special in my life who I love very dearly has begun doing extremely well on a low-carb diet without really trying that hard. It's the cute and precious woman I call my wife named Christine.

You'll recall Christine FINALLY took my advice to start livin' la vida low-carb in mid-May not to lose weight necessarily, but to get her triglycerides to drop. After all, a high-carb diet significantly raises triglycerides while causing HDL "good" cholesterol to plummet!

Since we know that these two health markers are better for measuring heart disease risk than LDL or total cholesterol, it just stands to reason to have Christine go on a low-carb diet. I told her that simply eating this way will make her triglycerides plummet to below 100 in very short order and we're confident that is precisely what is happening! We'll know for sure next month when she has her blood work run.

Although she's on low-carb primarily as a means for improving her health (as so many people like this are discovering!), an interesting side effect has ensued for Christine--WEIGHT LOSS!

I told her that although she doesn't have a lot of weight to lose, she'll notice her clothes getting looser and the scale will move down. I'm not so sure she believed me at first, but she's a BIG believer now!

Without even trying, Christine has now lost a total of 13 pounds and her dress size has gone from a size 14 down to a size 8 over the past five weeks on the Atkins diet. WOW!!!

And, despite what some people may say about them, she's doing it by eating lots of low-carb foods to help her along in this journey, including La Tortilla Factory low-carb wraps, Flax Z Snax brownies, ChocoPerfection chocolate bars, Dannon Splenda-sweetened yogurt, Dreamfields pasta, GoLower nut bars, Russell Stover candies, and those yummy low-carb breads from Francis Simun Bakery. If people like Christine can use alternatives like these instead of the high-carb crap they've been eating, then the weight and health of our society would be greatly improved.

She's also consuming good quality sources of protein (turkey, chicken, and some beef--although she can't handle a lot of fat without experiencing pain where her gall bladder was removed last year) and absolutely adores this salad from the local grocery store called a BLT salad that's chock full of so much low-carb yummy to her tummy goodness she can hardly contain herself when she eats it! I'm thrilled to see Christine so excited about low-carb because she always looked at it as something "Jimmy did."

Sure, she cut out most of her sugary sodas before, but still made me buy some regular Cokes for when she "needed a real one." But I'm proud of her for resisting the temptation since she began her Atkins diet in earnest because she has been remarkably strong. I guess it doesn't hurt to have a HUGE low-carb weight loss success story staring you in the face everyday! :)

When I met Christine she was a mere 90 pounds and was only 95 pounds on the day we got married (I was close to 350!). A dozen years of marriage later, she's not quite that tiny little bony woman I said "I do" to, but she's filled out quite well...maybe a little bit too well. That's where her new low-carb lifestyle is helping and I'm confident she'll keep on losing as her weight continues to fall where it needs to be.

We have a running bet now that I can get my weight within 75 pounds of hers (considering I used to weigh nearly 300 pounds MORE than Christine, it's quite a feat!). As of today, I weigh 222 pounds and she weighs 144--78 pounds apart. So she's ahead for now. But I'm coming after her! :p

How was your week? Do you have a spouse who is low-carbing with you or has decided like Christine to follow in your footsteps? I think it's fantastic when couples go on low-carb together because you create a bond through this experience unlike anything else you do together. Share your thoughts about this below!

Comments:
I had a good week. Down around 3.5 lbs! My hubby is trying to lc with me for health and weight loss, but it's much harder for him because of his traveling. He doesn't always have me there to fix him good low-carb meals and keep him encouraged. He'll get there though.

Congrats Christine! You are doing wonderful!!

Being prepared is priority one on low-carb. Like riding a bike--once you learn it, you never forget how to do it! CONGRATS on your weight loss, Amy!

A big congratulations to everyone and esp to Christine! Way to go!!We will pray for good results on the bloodwork next month!

THANKS so much, TESS!!!

So.. if she was low-carbing for HEALTH why is she eating PROCESSED foods? Russell Stover? Clear the way. Gives most people horribly gastro-intestinal problems, not to mention stalls most weight loss because they really aren't ALL THAT low carb. And since when does someone who loses only 13 pounds lose 3 whole dress sizes? I've lost 35 pounds and have also been working out and have only lost 3 dress sizes.

Three things LeeAnn:

1. Not WAS low-carbing for health, but rather IS.

2. She chooses to eat the aforementioned low-carb foods because they are better alternatives to the high-carb equivalents she was eating.

3. Actually, she lost 6 dress sizes going from a 14 down to an 8.

I'll be danged if I'm gonna let you discourage my honey from doing the great job that she is on her low-carb lifestyle, so go take your negativity elsewhere. It sure ain't welcome here.

Well, sorry if I sounded negative, but most people who do low-carb kind of know that the best way to go, especially for HEALTH, is whole foods, not processed foods. I'm glad she has had success like most people do on low-carb, its great! Just some things didn't make much sense.

Good for Christine, that is great!
As far as sizes, everyone has a different body so who is anyone to judge? I know I lost 6 but it took me 35 to lose.
The other stuff, I used when I first went on to stop my cravings too.......it helped alot and have slowly weaned myself off of it all.

My week? hmmmmmmmm don't ask Jimmy, I put it all in my journel last night but let's just say it's another day!

See ya next week........
Wanda

THANKS for checking in, Wanda! It's okay if you had a down week, but that only means next week will be BETTER! Keep your head up, kiddo. I'm proud of you anyway. :)

Hi Jimmy,

Congrats to your wife and to everyone else getting fitter with the LowCarb WOE. I've been doing a "modified" Kimkins along with some exercise (30 min cardio every day) and I'm well on my way to losing the 50lbs I want to lose (I'm down 10). My body fat % went from 49% to 38%!!!

I want to make one comment: different people carry their "fat" differently, so for Christine to lose 3 dress sizes (it goes every other number, Jimmy) with only 13 lbs is totally possible. I have more weight to lose, so so far I've only gone down one -- but to each his/her own. Congrats again Christine!!!

By the way, Jimmy, I've become an advid reader to your blog and I was HAPPILY SHOCKED to see you read mine!!! http://lowcarbcheaply.blogspot.com/

I was extremely honored and happy. You do a great job -- I listen to your podcasts and have been reading your blog daily.

P.S. Would you mind listing me & ma blog as one of your 30-in-30 participants? I'd love to be included as a part of your online family. :-)

You got it, Annika! I appreciate your kind comments.

Hey Jimmy! Congrats to Christine! She must have lost a lot of fat to lose down from a size 14 to a size 8. I'm impressed!
I have had a bad week, and am retaining water due to some health problems - plus my body loves 130, but I am trying. I am getting a Bowflex for my birthday that should be arriving any day. I can't wait! Hopefully this will jump-start my weight loss.
You and Christine keep up the good work!

Claire :)

THANKS, Claire! That's what is so neat about low-carb...you BURN a whole lotta fat. Glad to hear you are moving forward with your fitness goals even if the scale isn't moving as fast as you like. Remember, you can lose and burn fat off of your body without weight loss. When my weight stalled for 10 weeks in 2004 during my original weight loss, I lost 6 inches off my waist during that time. YOU GO GIRL!

I'm late in replying. For the week of this post I gained 0.6 back up to 140.0.

I'll update with today's weigh-in when you get next Tuesday's post up. :) Lower-carb NutriSystem is pretty well working. My carbs are under 100g a day and my protein is over 100g. My calories are around 1300 which is as low as I can go and with all the exercise I do I probably don't want to go lower.

One note about Dreamfield's - I discovered it's not low-carb. I ate it and then tested my blood sugar and all the carbs ARE digestible - my blood sugar just kept rising - but it does act like a low-GI carb. My blood sugar went up slowly but steadily. I performed the test twice, testing my blood sugar every 15 minutes, with the same result both times.

So low-GI carb - yes. Low-carb - no. I hardly ever eat it now since I discovered that it did mess up my blood sugar pretty badly. More than two hours after eating it my blood sugar was up in the 120s and still rising.

I'm glad Nutrisystem is working for you, Victoria, just as Kimkins is helping me (down 28 pounds in 26 days!). As for Dreamfields, I haven't had the same issues as you and neither has Christine. Besides the temporary bloated feeling from the indigestible carbs, it hasn't impacted our weight loss either.

THANKS again for checking in! :)

But have you tested your blood sugar on it? It may work very well and you can certainly lose weight eating it; it's a low-GI carb though. I haven't had any "issues" with it except what it does to blood sugar. I bet if you were to run the test I did that you would see the same blood sugar rise that I did.

You're probably right, Victoria. But it's still a better option than the regular high-carb version. :)

Oh it definetly is! It's the only pasta that is low-GI and actually tastes good. I still eat it, but very rarely now.
