The LLVLC Show #82: Calories May Not Matter As Much As You Think

Just when you think there's no hope for the next generation to understand important nutritional concepts, along comes a refreshing, information-hungry young student to challenge the status quo regarding calories. Check out this very perceptive question asked by a 6th-grader in a local newspaper in the Binghamton, New York area:

“Why do people get fat by not eating too much but by eating junk all day?”

Basically, the kid wants to know, “Why do people who eat MORE food and calories more often lose weight while some people who eat LESS food and calories in meals all at one time gain weight?” It goes to the very heart of the calories in, calories out myth we have long been told is absolutely, unequivocally true.

WRONG!

In Episode 82 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we actually hear an intelligent and well-informed response to this child's question from a graduate school student named Lina Begdache who is earning her PhD in Biological Sciences next year from Binghamton University in New York. Hear what she had to say by clicking on the "Play In Popup" link below or download it to your iPod to listen to today's podcast show:

Most medical and research students are being taught that there must be a caloric equalibrium established with the calories consumed versus calories expended in order to maintain and manage body weight. Burning more than consuming results in weight loss while burning less than consuming results in weight gain. Right?

Well, maybe not and the soon-to-be Dr. Begdache was brilliant in explaining why this oft-repeated "calories in, calories out" premise is dead wrong. She also provides some thought-provoking evidence that low-calorie diets are actually harmful to your health--which again flies in the face of conventional wisdom. You're gonna LOVE her answers!

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Going to iTunes
3. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
4. Subscribing to the RSS feed

What's your take on Begdache's opinions about calories? Are calories consumed really indiscriminate as we have been led to believe? Or does the quality of the carbs and the frequency they are consumed count for something? Is it really all about "calories in, calories out?"

Discuss these questions and more in the show notes section of Episode 82 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." What say you about these questions and do you agree that Lina Begdache did an outstanding job?

Speaking of the topic of calories, I can't wait for you to get your hands on a copy of the upcoming Knopf release by Gary Taubes called Good Calories, Bad Calories because he methodically deals with the traditional calorie theory and blows it completely out of the water. Click here to read my interview with him earlier this month and I'm working on doing a podcast show with Taubes after his book hits stores on September 25, 2007.

The LLVLC Show #80: Is The Absence Of Low-Carb Products On Shelves Proof That This Diet Is Dead?

Low-carb has got to be dead now since all those low-carb products that were on supermarket shelves a few years back are gone. I guess this just proves that low-carb has finally been proven to be the dangerous and unhealthy diet that it is.

Have you heard this line of reasoning from anti-low-carb people before?

Well, in Episode 81 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" today I talk about a very important distinction between low-carb the business and low-carb the diet. When you remove the vitriol hatred for the Atkins diet and other low-carb plans from the equation, this just makes sense. Click on the "Play In Popup" link below or download it to your iPod to hear today's podcast show:

icon for podpress  "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 81 [17:55m]: Play in Popup | Download

Livin' la vida low-carb as a healthy nutritional approach has erroneously been thrown into the discussion about the low-carb business failures. There are good reasons why so many of those "low-carb" products that came out a few years back failed that has absolutely nothing at all to do with the low-carb diet. When you merely look at the economics of it, then you are being blinded by the reality--that real people all around the world are losing weight and getting healthy eating this way.

Do you believe the financial woes of so many businesses that created "low-carb" products back in the hey day of low-carb dieting has anything at all to do with low-carb the diet? Some would say that it is indicative of this diet's demise. And how do you explain the seemingly constant obsession by the media and the so-called health "experts" on this low-carb "fad?"

Let us hear all about it as you share what's on your mind regarding this topic. Everyone has their own opinions, so let's hear YOURS! :)

Tune in to "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" on Thursday as we discuss whether frequency of meals consumed is more important than the traditional three-meals-a-day we've all grown accustomed to. You're not gonna believe what a graduate student in Biological Science had to say about this subject, so be sure to check it out!

LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 1): Jimmy & Christine Moore On Low-Carb Diet Success

After posting a very brief introductory promo video on YouTube earlier this week about the brand new video series I am launching there, my wife Christine and I were excited to get started on our first official episode of what will be called "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube." We're keepin' it simple and to the point because many people on YouTube have never even heard of Livin' La Vida Low-Carb, Jimmy Moore, or my low-carb weight loss success story.

But all that's about to change, though!

You can't help but notice the glaring absence of some fun, informative, and entertaining videos that portray the low-carb lifestyle in the positive manner it is for so many of us on one of the hottest sites on the Internet--YouTube. That's why I decided to take it on as yet another extension of the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" media family (in addition to my book, blog, podcast, and forum) to spread the message even further to a new audience of desperate and hopeless overweight and obese people looking for a way to get fit and healthy. Low-carb living will "get 'er done!"

For our ever-exciting Episode 1 of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube," Christine and I decided to continue the light and conversational mood of our promo video as we shared our own personal experiences with the low-carb lifestyle--mine beginning in January 2004 and hers in May 2007.

Everything in the main part of the video is totally unscripted and unedited, so you get the raw emotion and reactions just as they were when we recorded it. I did add a few sound effects where appropriate, but that helped make it a little more enjoyable to watch as it was Moore vs. Moore. We'll probably keep this same style for future videos, so let us know what you think.

Here is our first full-length video on YouTube:

Can you tell we like to crack on each other? LOL! It's all in good fun, though, and we've been doing it for over a dozen years of wedded bliss together. I'm happy to have Christine joining me in this endeavor because she doesn't normally do this kind of thing. I'm the outgoing one while she's the introvert. But we're getting her out of her shell, aren't we? ;)

Like so many of you did with our promo video, I'm gonna ask you to go to the YouTube page for this video and leave a comment, make this video a favorite if you liked it, and then subscribe to our video series so you'll never miss future episodes. In fact, you'll be able to access my latest and archived videos in this series anytime by visiting the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" YouTube channel page anytime.

Recording, producing, and uploading these videos to YouTube takes many hours of time to invest, but I think this is going to be a worthwhile venture to continue my mission of educating, encouraging and inspiring others to achieve what they think is impossible--weight loss and improved health. You and I know better, don't we, which is why we're livin' la vida low-carb, baby! ;)

If you'd like to help me spread the word, then tell everyone you know to watch "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube" with Jimmy & Christine Moore and feel free to post a link to my videos on your blog or web site. The more people we can reach the better, so THANK YOU in advance for helping me make this another means for reaching people the uplifting message of livin' la vida low-carb. God bless you!

The LLVLC Show #80: The Argument Against Going On A Diet To Lose Weight

In Episode 80 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we hear a rather strange theory in favor of NOT dieting or trying to lose weight if you are overweight or obese. This is one you gotta hear to believe, so check it out RIGHT NOW! Click on the "Play In Popup" link below or download it to your iPod:

icon for podpress  "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 80 [16:19m]: Play in Popup | Download

A fellow blogger named Ampersand from the "Alas, A Blog" blog wrote a seemingly convincing column in defense of ditching dieting forever. He's dead serious about this and states his case with evidence to back up everything he asserts. You can read his piece entitled "The Case Against Weight-Loss Dieting." It's quite a thought-provoking article, so check it out!

Low-carb living is hotter than ever, so keep up with it by:

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Going to iTunes
3. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
4. Subscribing to the RSS feed

What do you think about Ampersand's premise that the overweight and obese are better off remaining fat than even attempting to do something about their weight? What flaws do you see in his line of reasoning? Does he make some valid points or is he all wet?

Talk about it and share what YOU think. This oughta be a lively discussion!

THANK YOU for your support of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" and I'm happy to hear from you with suggestions for future episodes. E-mail me anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net.

Uplifting Low-Carb Lifestyle Coming To YouTube

First blogging, then podcasting...now Jimmy Moore tries YouTube!

Uh-oh, look out world, Jimmy Moore's on YouTube now! EEEEEK!

Yep, at long last I'm ready to make my worldwide debut on the most famous Internet video housing company on the planet thanks to that awesome new iMac I told you about last weekend (in fact, that "thermal" picture of me looking at the YouTube logo above was created with the Photo Booth application on the iMac).

I'm having some fun with these new toys and am preparing to put them to good use. Ever since my buddy Kent Altena stopped making his FANTASTIC low-carb videos on YouTube earlier this year, there's been a serious void out there for reliable and trusted videos about the low-carb lifestyle. With my new iMac, I fully intend to do something about that!

With a successful blog and podcast show already, I'm anxious to see what kind of feedback my low-carb videos will receive on YouTube. No doubt the low-fatties will send their trolls to try to shut me down, but we'll just keep sharing the truth. After all, it's on our side!

I am but a novice at this video-making adventure right now, but I hope to get better and better as time passes. The process is not very difficult and actually I enjoy getting my hands dirty in the production side of it, too. The iMac makes it, as Geico would say, "so easy a caveman can do it."

For my big video debut on YouTube, I thought I'd share a quick sample segment featuring me and my beautiful wife Christine sharing a whimsical moment together on camera about my excursion into the wonderful world of YouTube vodcasting.

Watch the video complete with appropriate music and sound effects:

Ain't my sweet wife so cute?! She makes me look better than I deserve and she's so adorable with the expressions she makes. At the end, she couldn't stop cracking up, though! You bet we had fun making that video and there'll be more where that came from.

If you liked this video and want to support my newfound effort to further the low-carb outreach to the YouTube community, then please go to the page for this video and rate it, favorite it, and leave a comment about it! It would be very much appreciated!

Be sure to tell all your friends, co-workers, and family that "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" is coming to YouTube! I'm excited about this and hope you are, too.

Feel free to offer suggestions for videos anytime by writing to me at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. I'd be delighted to hear from you!

Look out, YouTube! Here comes Jimmy Moore!

Infectobesity: Ad-36 Virus Afflicts 30 Percent Of The Obese

It's TERRRRRIFIC TUESDAY again here at the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge and I'm so happy to have you here today. Come on in and get comfortable because we are all working towards the same mission and purpose: lasting and permanent weight loss success in an effort to bring our health under control. Feel free to share what's on your mind as you go through this amazing journey.

Dr. Magdalena Pasarica has found a new "fattening" virus

The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 400 million people worldwide are currently overweight or obese. Included in that number is an astonishing 20 million children under the age of five who are getting fatter faster than any other generation before it.

But could there be more to this prescient issue than overeating?

That's something researchers are examining behind-the-scenes right now and they think a common virus found in humans is the culprit in nearly one-third of the obese, according to this WebMD article about the findings presented at the 234th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society on Monday in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lead researcher Dr. Magdalena Pasarica, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Endocrinology Lab at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and her fellow researchers were observing lab tests from adult male and female liposuction patients many of which had a common respiratory and eye infection-causing virus called adenovirus-36, aka Ad-36 as well as E4Orfl.

But they noticed something odd about this Ad-36 virus.

When they pulled the adult stem cells from the tissue samples and infected them with Ad-36, after one week those cells had become "fat" cells while the uninfected ones had not. In fact, when the researchers put more of the Ad-36 virus in the cells, there was an even higher amount of fat developed. The same cause and effect happened regardless of sex.

Even worse, those "fat" cells actually began collecting fat more rapidly than normal which leads to an even greater growth--of the fat cells and then of stored fat on the body. It all leads back to Ad-36 as the culprit in this fat development in the body.

It turns out that Ad-36 in adult stem cells can turn them into fat cells. Dr. Pasarica calls this the "fattening effect" which she believes should be the impetus for working on a vaccine or drug to remedy the problem. Previous research by Dr. Pasarica's team found that Ad-36 was found in nearly one-third (30 percent) of the obese compared with only 11 percent of the non-obese.

Dr. Pasarica noticed in this new study that Ad-36 will ultimately "store more fat." However, she was quick to note that Ad-36 has not been shown to actually cause obesity and it may not even impact the weight of those who are exposed to it.

"We're not saying that a virus is the only cause of obesity, but this study provides stronger evidence that some obesity cases may involve viral infections," Dr. Pasarica explained. "We would ultimately like to identify the underlying factors that predispose some obese people to [the effects of] this virus and eventually find a way to treat it."

The researchers are looking into why this virus causes fat to store and how long it will continue to do so even after being removed.

But...

The very likelihood that the Ad-36 virus could be the source of over 100 million cases of obesity is why the researchers will undoubtedly be pushing for that anti-obesity vaccine to specifically treat this viral infection. Oh boy, here we go again!

How many obesity vaccines are we going to have on the market? We've already seen ones like this that reduces ghrelin levels, an anti-obesity nasal spray called CP404, and let's not forget about the new over-the-counter drug that treats obesity while stinking up your pants called Alli.

And there are more than 50 human adenovirus strands out there that may each need their own vaccine to combat. You may recall I blogged about Ad-37 in January 2006 discovered by American Obesity Association President Dr. Richard L. Atkinson who claimed this virus made obesity contagious. One other obesity-related strand that we know of includes Ad-5.

So where does it end? Sure, I will admit that there is a real possibility that some people are fat because of something other than their diet and physical activity. But don't we all agree that the overwhelming majority of overweight and obese people have gotten that way from making poor dietary choices? Obesity is NOT a disease and I believe that now more than ever before.

Putting the onus on an obscure virus that may or may not be the cause and making that the presumed reason for obesity grants the overweight and obese permission to do nothing pro-active about their weight and health. Instead, they'll plop down hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars to get these various "miracle" vaccines with a myriad of possible side effects. What's the point?

While it is interesting to look at obesity through the eyes of scientific research, it is much more practical and helpful to the obese for them to be encouraged to take individual responsibility for their own weight and health. Sure, there are other factors involved in their problem other than food. But that's a good place to start.

Teaching a wide variety of healthy nutritional concepts and allowing people to choose the ones that will work best for them is a much more effective way to take on the growing obesity epidemic than coming up with more and more drugs, sprays, and vaccines to fight it.

We don't have a lack of medical answers, but rather the need for some clarity in the realm of obesity treatment, including practical, real-life all-natural solutions that could put a major dent in this problem. Until we arm people with the useful information they need to get a handle on their obesity, we'll keep on toiling in disappointing attempts that keep failing us time and time again.

Dr. Pasarica's research was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). And additional research dollars have already been requested by her research team to continue exploring the Ad-36 connection to obesity.

One of Dr. Pasarica's fellow research colleagues is Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar who I have featured here at my blog previously with his research on the satiating effects of eggs compared with bagels for breakfast. Dr. Dhurandhar is the one who came up with the clever term "infectobesity" to describe the condition brought on by viruses like Ad-5, Ad-36, and Ad-37.

Global obesity has been a keen research interest of Dr. Dhurandhar since he observed a few years back that chickens in India infected with the bird flu virus actually got fatter prior to their death. He has wanted to know why ever since and began looking at various virus strains to see if there was a same connection happening in humans. That's when he came across Ad-36.

Dr. Dhurandhar says that we need to take care of this culprit in the obesity epidemic as one small step in the right direction.

"We're not talking about preventing all types of obesity, but if it is caused by this virus in humans, we want a vaccine to prevent this," he noted.

When challenged with my assertion that most people are simply making poor dietary choices and that is leading to their obesity, Dr. Dhurandhar says there's more to it than that.

"Certainly overeating has something to do with gaining weight. No doubt about that," he admitted. "But that is not the whole truth."

He said the causes of obesity include overeating, a genetic predisposition, poor metabolism, and even viruses and infections. It's that last one that has Dr. Dhurandhar and others anxious to begin work on a vaccine and other treatment options.

I'm still not convinced that is going to do anything other than create yet another overpriced obesity drug available to a desperate society hoping for a cure to a problem--one that can be overcome naturally with a little bit of blood, sweat, and tears. THAT'S the message people need to be hearing (which is what the British Medical Association head was trying to say a few weeks back) and I'll keep saying it until the message finally sinks in.

What about you? Does talk of an obesity vaccine excite you and give you hope that your weight can be brought under control with a drug? Or have you already realized that the ultimate solution to your obesity must come from making the appropriate changes in your lifestyle to bring about about the best results?

Heart-To-Heart With NY Times Journalist Gary Taubes

Exclusive interview with "Good Calories, Bad Calories" author Gary Taubes

I was talking with my wife Christine the other day about the front cover of the upcoming Gary Taubes book entitled "Good Calories, Bad Calories." I asked her, "Why do you think there is a slice of bread with butter on the cover?" Christine, being that brilliant woman who was the salutatorian of her high school class, retorted matter-of-factly by saying, "Jimmy, the butter is the 'good calories' and the bread is the 'bad calories.'" Isn't she BRILLIANT! That makes so much sense now. DUH!

Well, I'm pleased to have the author of that book--Gary Taubes--with us today for an exclusive interview at the brand new "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum. This is the first such media appearance he has conducted with anyone prior to the highly-anticipated release of this book set to shake up the diet and health industry. And I'm privileged to bring it to you today.

Taubes is quite forthright about why his book took so long to come out, why it was he would decided on the ultimate title of the book, and what he hopes will happen as a result of the book releasing to the world next month. That book could very well be the beginning of a major "paradigm shift" in nutrition that has been sorely needed for decades.

If we can only get the doctors, nutritionists, and other so-called health "experts" who Taubes says "haven't got a clue what real science is" to wake up to the truth, then that may happen sooner than later. Relax and enjoy this one-on-one with the man who could very well be the instigator of it all.

Read the interview in its entirety at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Discussion" forum RIGHT NOW by clicking here.

The LLVLC Show #78: Why Do Fat People In Movies Act So Weird?

"How YOU doin'?" Is THIS the way we want the obese portrayed?

In Episode 78 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," I take a closer look at the movies that have come out of Hollywood in the past few years to see how they are characterizing fat people on the silver screen. It's mostly stereotypical, but there are signs of improvement. Listen in today to hear all about it:

icon for podpress  "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 78 [16:00m]: Play in Popup | Download

My wife and I enjoy watching movies together and have seen our fair share of all kinds of films, including ones that feature overweight and obese people in them. In this podcast show today, I take a look at many of these fat flicks, including Eddie Murphy's Norbit, Ryan Reynolds' Just Friends, Gwyneth Paltrow's Shallow Hal, and Mo'Nique's Phat Girlz, just to name a few. These movies offer a mixed bag of good and bad which I highlighted in Episode 78.

Wanna getcha low-carb groove on? Get on with it when you want by:

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Going to iTunes
3. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
4. Subscribing to the RSS feed

Are you happy with the way Hollywood depicts the overweight and obese in movies? Or do characters like Eddie Murphy's Rasputia in Norbit merely set back all the progress that has been made to break down the stereotypes? Also, would you go to see a movie with an obese person as a positive featured character in a film?

Share your thoughts about this and tell us what you favorite "fat" movies of all time are. I'm sure I've missed a few, so let me hear from you.

THANK YOU for listening to "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" and please come back again on Monday for yet another episode of the Internet's #1 podcast about the amazingly healthy low-carb lifestyle!

YOU Decide Whether To Stay Positive Or Go Negative

Hey everybody! I'm a little late with this week's update in the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge because I just got back from vacation in Indiana for a family reunion with Christine's family. Although my weight was up slightly from the trip, I'm not worried. We'll get it moving downward again in no time. Let me hear from you on your progress this week. :D

I received an amazing e-mail a few days ago which is making the rounds entitled "All About Attitude" that was extremely powerful as it relates to our perspective while losing weight. I don't usually publish such forwarded messages from my e-mail box, but this one was just too good not to.

Even if you have read this one before, I think you'll agree it is something all of us who are livin' la vida low-carb need to be reminded of from time to time because it's easy to lose your focus. What this will teach anyone is that ultimately YOU decide whether to stay positive or go negative in your reaction to your weight loss progress.

This one's a classic, so I encourage you to print it out as a reminder:

John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"

He was a natural motivator.

If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, "I don't get it!

You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"

He replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood."

Each time some thing bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.

"Yes, it is," he said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood."

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life.

I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.

I saw him about six months after the accident.

When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?"

I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

"The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter," he replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live."

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.

He continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me," said John. "She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity'."

Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."

He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.

The Bible says, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:25-34.

After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

I just LOVE that story! Remember it when you feel like being negative.

Want a GREAT way to reduce the stress in your diet naturally? Here are a few tips to help you do that and become the success you deserve to be:

1. Pray

2. Go to bed on time.

3. Get up on time so you can start the day relaxed, not hurried.

4. Say no to projects that won't fit into your time schedule or that will compromise your mental health.

5. Delegate tasks to capable others.

6. Simplify and un-clutter your life.

7. Less is more.

8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together.

10. Take one day at a time.

11. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety.

12. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases.

13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.

14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.

15. Do something for the "kid" in you everyday.

16. Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line.

17. Get enough rest.

18. Eat right.

19. Get organized so everything has its place.

20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life.

21. Write down thoughts and inspirations.

22. Every day, find time to be alone.

23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don't wait until it's time to go to bed to try and pray.

24. Make friends with Godly people.

25. Keep a folder of favorite Scriptures on hand.

26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good "Thank you Jesus."

27. Laugh.

28. Laugh some more!

29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.

30. Develop a forgiving attitude.

31. Be kind to unkind people (they need it most).

32. Sit on your ego.

33. Talk less; listen more.

34. Slow down.

35. Remind yourself that you are not the GM of the universe.

36. Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before.

37. Never borrow from the future.

38. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it.

39. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn't happen, then you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you still have to worry twice.

40. Be thankful for what you do have rather than regretting what you don't.

There you have it! All of your dieting woes are history and now you KNOW how to react to stressful situations when they arise so you don't turn to food for comfort. :D Be encouraged! You WILL overcome!

How was your week? Let's hear from you!

The LLVLC Show #76: Hey, Here's Another Bariatric Physician Interview!

Do you remember the series of interviews I conducted with those fantastic obesity doctors a few months ago? It was truly an honor to come face-to-face with some of the best and brightest minds in the field of bariatrics during my trip to the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) obesity conference in Nashville, Tennessee back in May. If you missed any of them because you are new to my blog or haven't been here in a while, then just click on the links below to check 'em all out (they're REALLY good and the feedback to them has been overwhelmingly positive!):

- Dr. Scott Rigden
- Dr. Mike Kennedy
- Dr. Larry Richardson
- Dr. Joan Temmerman
- Dr. Kurt Kraft
- Dr. Eric Westman
- Dr. Denise Bruner
- Dr. Mary Vernon

Lost in the shuffle of all these interviews was one that somehow didn't make it. I thought there was supposed to be another one, but that weekend was such a blur it went by so fast. Not thinking much about it, I moved on with the podcast show until last week I noticed a file on my desktop with the interview I conducted with Dr. Allen Rader from Idaho on it.

Hmmm, that one never aired! So, I went to open it up and it was corrupted, damaged, and on life support. UGH! In fact, it was chopped up in about 100 different segments that would have taken a miracle to put back together. Well, leave it to a true angel, my amazing podcast show producer Kevin Kennedy-Spaien to do the next-to-impossible--he FIXED IT!

Boy, am I glad he did because my interview with Dr. Rader was among my favorites. You can listen to it RIGHT NOW in today's Episode 76 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." Click "Play In Popup" or "Download" below and LISTEN NOW:

icon for podpress  "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 76 [20:07m]: Play in Popup | Download

Dr. Rader is probably the most articulate, yet personable physicians I have ever met in my life. You can just hear in his voice what living healthy and losing weight the right way means to him as he speaks so fluently on this subject. That's what happens to you when you lose weight yourself--YOU BECOME INFECTIOUS (in a good way, of course!)

Never miss a moment of the show by:

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Going to iTunes
3. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
4. Subscribing to the RSS feed

Dr. Rader has some of the most extraordinary ways to help his obese patients conceptualize what they are eating. What do you think about the teaspoons of sugar visualization he uses? Or how about his utter disdain for using the phrase "fall off the wagon?" And what did you think about his belief that overweight and obese people should manage their diet just like a diabetic does. Let's talk about Episode 75 and this long lost podcast interview I conducted with the great Dr. Allen Rader. It was WELL worth the wait, don't you think?

I'll be leaving on a family vacation with NO COMPUTER (except my iPhone!) starting on Friday and will not be returning until next Wednesday. So Monday's "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" will be featuring Connie Bennett's interview with me from a few weeks ago on her brand new "Stop SUGAR SHOCK!" radio show. THANKS for listening and ENJOY!

McUh-Oh: Mind-Numbing McDonald's Marketing Makes Munchkins Get The Munchies

Welcome again to weigh-in day here at the "30-In-30" Low-Carb Weight Loss Challenge and I'm super-excited about hearing your progress on this amazing journey to vastly improved health. You should be very proud of all you have accomplished.

Dr. Thomas Robinson says the cultural influence of McDonald's unmatched

If anyone ever doubted the enormous impact of the marketing blitz undertaken by the world's most famous fast food restaurant on the most vulnerable members of our society--CHILDREN--then I would simply refer you to this USA Today column about a brand new study that should scare the living daylights out of anyone who cares about the subject of health. This is just plain frightening if you ask me.

Lead researcher Dr. Thomas N. Robinson, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and his fellow researchers wanted to examine the "effects of cumulative, real-world marketing and brand exposures" on toddlers to see what effect, if any, consumer branding would have on their food preferences.

A total of 63 children between the ages of 3 and 5 from low-income families from the from government assistance Head Start program in San Mateo County, CA were give five pairs of identical foods and beverages--hamburgers, chicken nuggets, French fries, milk or juice, and carrots--that were packaged in wrappers stating they were from McDonald's and another in plain packaging. Each of the study participants were asked to tell the researchers if the foods tasted the same or if they had a preference for one over the other.

The stunning results? The children almost universally preferred the food and said it tasted better when it was wrapped in McDonald's packaging than the plain packaging. Remember, IT WAS EXACTLY THE SAME FOOD!

Here are some of the other key findings in the study:

- 77% preferred the French fries they thought were from McDonald's
- Only 13% liked the non-labeled French fries
- 54% liked the McCarrots compared to 23% in the plain wrapper
- 29 kids chose McDonald's hamburger, 22 the other one
- Less than one in four said all the food tasted the same

A closer analysis of the study participants who had multiple television sets in their homes and were more heavy users of McDonald's found that there was an even "greater effect of branding" among this group.

The conclusion of the researchers was quite predictable.

"Branding of foods and beverages influences young children's taste perceptions," they reported in the study. "The findings are consistent with recommendations to regulate marketing to young children and also suggest that branding may be a useful strategy for improving young children's eating behaviors."

WOW, can you believe this? In a way, it's good news to know that McDonald's has this kind of powerful influence over the behavior of kids that the study participants would think even McCarrots tasted better just because they are from Mickey D's. But I for one have very little confidence that the world's #1 fast food restaurant chain will do the right thing with that power.

We've seen what they think is "healthy" in recent marketing efforts and it's a far cry from what it could be. While the new R Gym concept at McDonald's to encourage exercise is a pretty good start, there seriously needs to be a better effort on their part to get the menu choices even healthier for those precious little ones who are the future.

It's amazing how you just call something McBLANK and the kids go hog wild for it like it's the best thing they've ever tasted. That's powerful and absolutely blows my mind. Years upon years of indoctrination through unrelenting marketing by McDonald's has given them such a branding foothold on the competition. Nobody else in the restaurant industry even comes close.

Although the young study participants were from poor families, Dr. Robinson says he is confident there would be similar results among the more moderate to high-income families as well, especially with more exposure to the branding not just on television but also the Internet.

The results of this study appear in the August 2007 issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

There has been a steady movement in recent years to blame fast food companies for rising obesity rates in the United States and around the world. Ever since Morgan Spurlock's Supersize Me movie became a surprise independent big screen box office hit a few years back, McDonald's has done everything it can to soften the backlash they've been getting, including donating millions of dollars to fight childhood obesity.

That's admirable on their part, but we come back to this branding issue again. I remember a scene in Spurlock's documentary that showed a group of kids looking at famous Americans and they were asked to say who these people were. Most of the kids were absolutely perplexed and dumbfounded by the most familiar of famous people.

But when Ronald McDonald's picture was flashed in front of them, they knew EXACTLY who that was in an instant. That's the power companies like McDonald's has over what kids eat that has consumer health groups concerned. A step in the right direction was made last month when a pledge was made by some of the nation's top junk food makers, including McDonald's to stop advertising their products to young children. It's a voluntary, non-arbitrary, non-binding agreement, so who knows how long it will last?

Everybody at least SHOULD know that fast food will make you fat--there's just no question about that I don't think. But it doesn't help when McDonald's remains delusional about this by claiming their food is part of a healthy lifestyle. Riiiiiiggght! NOT!

Putting the nutritional info on their packaging was a nice gesture (although they conveniently left off the carbohydrate counts on this nutritional label--UGH!), but it's gonna take more than that for McDonald's to prove they are serious about the obesity problem and being a part of the solution.

Studies have shown fried junk food consumption has DOUBLED and it keeps going higher and higher. Even the American Diabetes Association (ADA) admits fried potatoes comprise nearly half of the vegetable consumption by children. EEEK!

To make matters worse, McDonald's thinks it IS serving healthier food because their Happy Meals contain Apple Dippers with caramel dipping sauce loaded with high fructose corn syrup and lower fat in the rest of the food.

Get a load of this PC response from a McSpokesman.

"This [better food choices] is an important subject and McDonald's has been actively addressing it for quite some time," said company spokesman Walt Riker. "We've always wanted to be part of the solution and we are providing solutions."

Oh really?! What solutions, Mr. Riker? Pretending you care about health is nothing but a ruse and everyone can see right through it! How about offering some plain blueberries and/or strawberries instead of apples and a high-sugar dip? Why not offer the much healthier fatty portions of meat for children to eat to give them the macronutrients their bodies need to develop and grow into strong adults?

While this study confirms the branding capacity of a company in its attempt to market their products, the sad truth in all of this is McDonald's is the one with that power over the children. This is all the more reason why parents should take back control of what their kids are eating and not allow the external influences take away their responsibility as parents.

Interestingly, only two of the children in the study had NEVER been to McDonald's before, although close to one-third of them were heavy users going WEEKLY. This was a fascinating study that reminded me somewhat of the work Dr. Brian Wansink is doing with his Mindless Eating concepts at Cornell University. Dr. Robinson should send his study notes to Dr. Wansink because they are both on to something HUGE!

You can e-mail Dr. Thomas Robinson about his research at Tom.Robinson@Stanford.edu.

What do you think about this incredible new study on the power of marketing on what your children choose to eat? Is there a way to break this stronghold McDonald's has on the hearts and minds of children? Share your comments as well as an update on your weight loss progress.

The LLVLC Show #74: Let The Low-Carb Research Speak For Itself

Nothing is more frustrating than to see a headline like this one which completely distorts what REAL livin' la vida low-carb is all about. It's journalistic dishonesty to run a story like that when the scientific facts call into question the integrity of the "news" presented to the public.

In Episode 74 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," I personally respond to that column by sharing from two excellent research studies published in major scientific journals which completely debunk and discredit the false assertions made by the columnist who wrote the article as well as the researcher who presented incomplete data.

You don't need an iPod, just click on the "Play In Popup" link below to listen to today's podcast on your computer RIGHT NOW:

I'm truly amazed that people who purport to be objective journalists can write such tainted columns about the low-carb diet. I suppose it has become somewhat of an inside joke with these media elites over the past few years to try to discredit and damage something that medical science is proving to be a healthy way to eat and live. For the life of me, I can't understand why.

Here are even more ways to tune in anytime by:

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Going to iTunes
3. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
4. Subscribing to the RSS feed

With evidence like this and this, how can anyone STILL make the claim that livin' la vida low-carb is unhealthy for heart health? Oh, there will always be those who will be that bombastic and brainless, but how can you argue with the evidence? How do you handle those who throw such extreme positions about low-carb diets at you?

Share what you think and let's talk about it at the podcast web site. THANKS for making this the #1 most-listened to low-carb podcast show on the Internet today! :)
