The LLVLC Show #142: My Interview Wiith Dr. Jim LaValle From The LaValle Metabolic Institute

Dr. Jim LaValle says "we are way over-medicated" as a society
Sometimes I feel like there are two parallel universes going on simultaneously. The first one is full of traditionally-trained doctors who feel like the best first answer to any health problem is a prescription drug. The second one is full of naturopathic physicians who embrace the nutritional therapies for dealing with just about any concern about health. Both exist, but can both be the very best method for treating disease?
In Episode 142 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we speak with Dr. Jim LaValle who is a pharmacist, nutritionist, and natural medicine doctor who chooses to treat his patients through dietary changes that involve a low-carb lifestyle change (not a diet, as you will hear him repeat over and over again). What a refreshing voice of sanity in an increasingly insane world! You're gonna get excited about livin' la vida low-carb anew as you listen to Dr. LaValle in today's podcast.
Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 142:
He started the Cincinnati, OH-based LaValle Metabolic Institute to give people with obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, and worse the hope they have been looking for that better days are ahead for them. He employs several physicians, dietitians "that are well-versed in low-carb," acupuncturists, and more who are ready to help people restore their health back to where it needs to be. When you visit the web site, be sure to sign up for Dr. LaValle's new Metabolic Minute newsletter.
If you want to learn more about Dr. Jim LaValle and his health philosophy, then you'll want to pick up a copy of his book Cracking The Metabolic Code. And be looking for several new books coming from him later this year and in 2009. What a wealth of information Dr. LaValle is as he seeks to promote healthy low-carb living with his patients from all around the world.

The LLVLC Show #141: Interviewing Dr. Julie Kahn About Diet & Fertility

Dr. Julie Kahn tells us about the unique role of diet in fertility
One of the most precious miracles that we are able to witness and experience in our lives is the creation and development of a baby boy or girl inside of a mother's womb. Procreating is arguably the most amazing thing human beings are able to do, but how often do we take it for granted? Are there things we can do even before conception that will enable us to give that soon-to-be baby the best chance at being healthy?
In Episode 141 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," we get the answers to those questions and more from a bona fide expert in the field named Dr. Julie Kahn from The Institute for Progressive Medicine. She is a naturopathic physician with specialization in infertility, gynecology, nutrition, functional endocrinology, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, environmental medicine, and cranialsacral therapy. In other words, she's MORE THAN QUALIFIED to speak about the indelible connection between diet and fertility and we're pleased to offer this interview with her on my podcast today.
Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 141:
Dr. Kahn hit on quite a few topics in this podcast, including what meats are best for fertility, which kinds of carbs are worst for fertility, what is the impact of soy for both men and women while trying to conceive, are supplements required when eating the recommended fertility diet, and ways you can avoid harmful chemicals around the house to eliminate the toxins the can cause problems when attempting to conceive. Considering all that Christine and I went through trying to get pregnant via in-vitro fertilization in December 2007, we thought it would be nice to interview an expert in this field to help other hopeful parents put themselves in the best position possible to start their own family.
I was especially impressed with Dr. Kahn's preference for natural ways to improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy. Too often doctors overlook how important a solid healthy diet and a toxic-free environment is for people wanting to have a baby. She provides practical ways to make your diet better and improving the way you live your life in the day-to-day so you can put your best foot forward in your efforts to conceive. If you or someone you know is trying to have a little one, then you need to listen to this podcast interview with Dr. Julie Kahn! :)

What are your thoughts about preconception healthcare as described by Dr. Kahn in my interview with her? Do you buy into the notion that it is necessary to begin changing your diet and lifestyle long before conception? Talk about this issue in the show notes section of Episode 141. What are your experiences in this area? Leave us feedback by calling our comment line at (206) 202-6516.
Coming up on Thursday, we will be sharing my interview with Cracking The Metabolic Code author Dr. Jim LaValle. This low-carb doctor is changing the lives of real people suffering from all sorts of health problems simply by getting them to examine the quality of the food they are putting in their mouth. It will be a fascinating discussion as we continue my interview series on "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." THANK YOU for listening!

The LLVLC Show #139: Gary Taubes Interview (Part 2)

Continuing my 45-minute interview with journalist Gary Taubes
One of the most listened to podcasts I've ever had happened earlier this week when I presented Part 1 of my interview with Gary Taubes. LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 38): What To Eat On Low-Carb Induction
In Episode 38 of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube," Christine and I attempt to answer that question with practical advice for anyone who is considering or wants to be refreshed on the basics of low-carb Induction. It sounds easy to just keep your carbs low by eating meat, eggs, and cheese all day, but Induction is so much more than that as you will find out in this informative video we made for those who would like to begin Induction.
Look at all the food you can eat on Induction in today's video:
I get so many e-mails from people who just don't know what to eat on their low-carb lifestyle. Part of the reason for this lack of knowledge is they haven't read any low-carb books to know how to do this way of eating correctly. Let me reiterate it here: READ THE BOOK!!! It's okay to have a basic understanding of livin' la vida low-carb, but why limit your education to a few bits and pieces here and there?
Get Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution for all the details about the Atkins diet. Or you can choose a book like Dr. Jonny Bowden's Living The Low-Carb Life if you are unsure of which low-carb plan you want to choose. With all low-carb plans, the Induction phase is VERY important, so don't neglect it! We'll be expanding on the subject of Induction again in our next video on YouTube, so be looking for that coming soon.
Our YouTube videos continue to attract new viewers each week, so you can see them all by clicking here. We are quickly approaching 500 subscribers to our videos and you can join that group by subscribing to our videos for yourself and see the new episodes of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube" within minutes after they are uploaded. The LLVLC Show #139: Gary Taubes Interview (Part 1)

Gary Taubes sat down with me in Phoenix, AZ to discuss low-carb
One of the most influential voices in the diet and health arena this decade isn't a doctor, researcher, clinician, dietitian, fitness buff, or any of the other so-called "experts" that we usually hear from as it relates to this subject. Nope, it's none of them and instead is, of all things, an American journalist named Gary Taubes. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year, then you should be very well aware of Taubes and his bestselling book about the unique role of carbohydrates as the root cause for obesity and most diseases called Good Calories, Bad Calories which continues and expands upon the ideas he wrote about in his infamous 2002 New York Times op-ed piece "What If It's All Been A Big Fat Lie?"
In Episode 139 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," you'll hear from Taubes himself in an interview I conducted with him in April 2008 at the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and Nutrition & Metabolism conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Gary is a very personable gentleman who has been dedicating himself to the research behind diet and disease for many years and have decided to dive head first into the debate and arena of ideas surrounding nutrition and health. This is a man on a mission as you will hear in Part 1 of my podcast interview with him today and then in Part 2 on Thursday.
Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 139:
Gary Taubes has been traveling around the nation giving a rather succinct lecture on the basic tenets of what he wanted to convey with his book. If you haven't seen the lecture, then you really should check it out for yourself because it is well worth the 72-minute investment of your time to listen to what this man has to say. As he revealed in today's segment, Taubes hopes to convince his publisher to allow him to create a more user-friendly book out of that lecture for the sake of clarity and understandability by those of us who are not medically inclined (which was the primary audience of Good Calories Bad Calories).
Hear interviews from REAL experts like Gary Taubes whenever you'd like by:
1. Listening at the official web site
2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
3. Subscribing to the RSS feed
4. Going to iTunes--Click here to subscribe!
So what do you think so far? Gary Taubes could literally talk on and on for hours about this subject which encompasses so much of his life right now and we need more people like him out there vocalizing what you and I have seen happen in our own lives since we started livin' la vida low-carb. This isn't some dangerous "fad" diet which we've been led to believe by the media and the "experts"--it's a life-changing event that could literally save the lives of millions more if it weren't so vilified. That's why Taubes wrote his book and is lecturing about this so fervently.
Talk about what you heard in Part 1 of the Taubes interview in the show notes section of Episode 139. If you happened to miss any of my blog posts about Gary Taubes and Good Calories, Bad Calories, then you can see them all in one place by clicking here. You can also provide us with your audio feedback about this interview by calling (206) 202-6516.
A special CONGRATULATIONS to Justin Wallraven, Maya, and Steve Whitley for being my three winners of the hit Canadian low-carb documentary called My Big Fat Diet. Last Monday I conducted a giveaway during Episode 137 by requesting a brief essay explaining how a high-fat, low-carb diet has transformed and changed your life forever. There were lots and lots of entries, so THANK YOU to everyone who tried to win. Keep listening for more chances to win FREE STUFF in the future. I appreciate your support! :)

LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 37): Aida Mollenkamp Joins Food Network This Summer

Aida Mollenkamp has a new show coming to The Food Network
Do you like watching The Food Network as much as my wife Christine does? She's a bona fide junkie and I've actually grown to like many of the shows on there, too. Watching these professional cooking kings and queens do their thing making some of the most delicious food you've ever seen is fun. That's why the channel has been such an overwhelming hit with viewers over the years.
In Episode 37 of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube," Christine and I share with you about another brand new show (like this one I recently blogged about) coming to The Food Network beginning on August 2, 2008 at 12:30pm/11:30 CST--it's called "Ask Aida". Featuring the lovely and talented Aida Mollenkamp, the premise of this new show is to let Aida fix your culinary conundrums during her broadcast. She is soliciting people to send her a video of their cooking problems so she can help fix them. She's like a "Dear Abby" for the kitchen!
See my two submissions to "Ask Aida" in today's video:

The LLVLC Show #138: An Interview With 'Half-Assed' Author Jennette Fulda

Blogger Jennette Fulda shares about her 200+ pound weight loss
It's one thing to blog about losing weight for the entire world to see. But it's yet another thing to actually LOSE weight and cut your weight in half. That's exactly what popular weight loss blogger Jennette Fulda did on her way shedding not just triple digits, but over 200 pounds! And guess what? She did it following a lower-carb South Beach diet and exercise program. WOO HOO!!! Way to go, Jennette!
In Episode 138 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," you'll hear directly from Jennette who shares about what life was like for her when she weighed over 370 pounds, how she was able to overcome her old habits by implementing smarter diet and fitness choices into her routine, and how all of these dramatic changes increased her confidence so much so that she penned all about her experiences in her debut book release entitled Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir.
Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 138:
I gotta tell you, Jennette is a real trip! If you've never seen her "Half of Me" blog (which I first told you about in this blog interview from last year), then you are missing out on some of the best free entertainment on the Internet. This woman is an amazingly talented writer who has been on both sides of the fitness equation. She knows what it's like hearing the fast food calling out your name, but she also knows why you should resist the urge to splurge. Although that perky personality has always been there, losing weight has shone a bright light on this beautiful young lady as she provides hope and inspiration to others who struggle with obesity like she once did.
If you were watching NBC-TV's Today show on Sunday morning, then you probably already saw Lester Holt interview Jennette about her weight loss and new book. She did an amazing job on the show, although I thought it was funny they wouldn't allow her to say the same of her book because of the word "ass" in the title. In fact, when they showed the front cover, there were two stick figures where the "ss" was. Too funny! And Jennette, bless her heart, tried to get in as much of the title at the end of the interview as she could. Ironically, I've heard MUCH worse on NBC (but that's another story!).

2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez

Are you inspired in your weight loss efforts after hearing from Jennette Fulda today? Is there anything you'd like to tell Jennette about how her story has impacted you? Share what's on your mind in the show notes section of Episode 138. Don't forget to check out Jennette's incredible blog for before and after pictures like you've never seen before, inspiring and hilarious blog entries, and everything else you'd expect from someone who has so dramatically changed her life for the better.
I'd like to remind you of a new feature we now have available to the listeners of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." You can provide audio feedback for me anytime by dialing (206) 202-6516. We'd LOVE to hear from you with your questions, comments, rants, or whatever is on your mind. Just share and you may hear yourself on a future episode the podcast. Also, don't forget to sign up for you chance to win your own copy of the hit Canadian low-carb documentary called My Big Fat Diet simply by going to the show notes section of Episode 137 and sharing a brief essay explaining how a high-fat, low-carb diet has transformed and changed your life forever. We'll be announcing the THREE winners on Monday, so hurry and enter TODAY!
And the wait is almost over! Coming up on Monday is Part 1 of my highly-anticipated and very exciting interview with award-winning science writer and bestselling author of Good Calories, Bad Calories Gary Taubes. I met him in person at the 2008 ASBP/Nutrition & Metabolism conference in Phoenix last month and he sat down and shared quite a bit about what has happened since the release of his book last Fall and discusses what's coming next for him in our 45-minute interview. I really think you're gonna enjoy what Gary has to say, so join us for Part 1 on Monday and Part 2 of my interview next Thursday. THANKS so much for listening! I really appreciate it.

The LLVLC Show #136: Interview with Low-Carb Researcher Dr. Richard Feinman (Part 2)

The brilliant Dr. Richard Feinman with his assistant Lauri Cagnassola
Picking up where we left off in Part 1 of my interview with Dr. Richard Feinman in my series from the American Society of Bariatric Physicians and Nutrition & Metabolism Society conference in Phoenix, Arizona last month, we've got so much more to share with you today from one of the most ardent supporters of the science behind livin' la vida low-carb today.
In Episode 136 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," Dr. Feinman discusses his favorite subject as it relates to carbohydrate restriction--diabetes. You'll hear the fervor in his voice as he speaks about patients sharing their low-carb success stories with the American Diabetes Association and their Congressmen, who he believes should begin immediate hearings on the subject of diabetes care in the United States. Some may think Dr. Feinman is radical for suggesting such a thing, but he may be on to something that you and I can actually help make happen.
Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 136:
If you support what Dr. Feinman is trying to do educating doctors and future doctors about a controlled-carbohydrate diet, then why not join the Nutrition & Metabolism Society today? It costs consumers $25 to sign up and would be a nominal investment in this fight to give low-carb the legitimacy it deserves. CLICK HERE if you are interested in taking livin' la vida low-carb to the next level so that others will have the knowledge to be able to benefit from the low-carb lifestyle in the future without ridicule or scorn.

And for those of you who are diabetic, do you now see even clearer what YOU can do to make a difference on the way your disease is treated? Share your thoughts about it in the show notes section of Episode 136. I especially want to thank Dr. Feinman for the generosity of his time for this outstanding interview.
But I'm far from through with my interview series. Next week, we'll be hearing from Mary Bissell, the producer of the hit Canadian documentary My Big Fat Diet (which I have blogged about before) on Monday and then an incredibly amazing weight loss blogger named Jennette Fulda from the "Half Of Me" blog talking about her irreverently-titled, but oh-so-inspiring new book entitled Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir on Thursday. LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 35): What Foods Do I Keep In My Pantry?
In Episode 35 of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube," Christine and I give you a quick tour through our kitchen showing you a sampling of the kinds of foods that make up our low-carb lifestyles. The audio of the video didn't download to my desktop for some reason, so we had to do a voiceover in the studio. Although it wasn't what we originally wanted, I think it turned out pretty good. The LLVLC Show #134: Interview with Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades (Part 2)

The Eades at the 2008 Nutrition & Metabolism meeting in Phoenix
After being surrounded by a virtual who's who of low-carb royalty at the recent American Society of Bariatric Physicians and Nutrition & Metabolism Society conference in Phoenix, Arizona in early April 2008, it's now time to share a few of the interviews I conducted while I was there. I shared Part 1 of my chat with Protein Power authors Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades on Monday and can't wait for you to hear Part 2 today.
In Episode 134 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore," the Eades talk about some of the more absurd dietary delusions of one Dr. Dean Ornish, the bias that exists from people when looking at the latest scientific studies, Dr. Mike's response to the brouhaha that arose between him and Anthony Colpo a few months back, and the tortuous yet effective intermittent fasting concept. This podcast is chock full of a goldmine of content that I hope you will absorb and enjoy!

I probably could have gone on for hours upon hours talking to this remarkable couple about livin' la vida low-carb. They are living legends in the world of low-carb living and I appreciated their gift of time to me so I could share their wisdom with you in these podcasts this week. THANK YOU Dr. Mike and Dr. Mary Dan for this opportunity and I hope to see you again at future Nutrition & Metabolism Society meetings.

Do you have any response to what you heard from the incredible Mike and Mary Dan Eades this week? Share whatever is on your mind in the show notes section of Episode 134. Be sure to stop by the blogs of both Dr. Mary Dan Eades and Dr. Mike Eades for even more inspiration and scientific analysis of the latest research. They are low-carb national treasures.
Coming up next week on "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" is another interview from Phoenix with biochemistry professor and co-editor of the Nutrition And Metabolism journal Dr. Richard Feinman. I did a blog interview with Dr. Feinman in 2006, but this was the first time I got to sit down with him for an audio interview. He's a fascinating intellectual and I think you'll enjoy what he has to say in next week's two-part podcast on Monday and Thursday. See you then!
