Fitness phenom Phoenix Gilman encourages a low-carb lifestyle

In Episode 125 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", we continue with my recent series of interviews with various diet and health experts by bringing you the ever-encouraging and positively passionate voice of Phoenix Gilman, author of the book Diet Failure...The Naked Truth. You see that picture of the man and woman on the front cover of her book up there at the top of this blog post? Well, that's Phoenix at the age of 46 and one of her 53-year-old clients at the time. YEP, I'm not kidding you!

You can't help but be encouraged by the enthusiasm of somebody like Phoenix Gilman and I was so fortunate to find her on YouTube talking about many of the ideas that so many of us believe in for healthy diet and fitness. She gets the carbohydrate connection to weight and health issues and articulates it in a no-nonsense, smack you between the eyeballs style that will make you stand up and cheer. It was such a pleasure speaking with someone who has obviously educated herself well on this subject and is now championing the cause of livin' la vida low-carb to everyone she comes into contact with.

How'd you like Phoenix Gilman? Is she not one of the most amazing people you've ever heard talk about the low-carb way of life? I happen to think we need a whole lot more people like Phoenix out there in a major way to continue the cultural turnaround towards livin' la vida low-carb. Share your impression of her in the show notes section of Episode 125. We originally were gonna run this interview as a two-parter this week, but decided it was so uplifting we had to share it all at one time! I hope you enjoyed it! :)

In today's podcast, I introduced a brand new sponsor of the show which I have featured here at my blog for a couple of weeks called Satiatrim. For anyone who struggles with hunger on your low-carb diet (and I receive quite a few e-mails from people who do) or are susceptible to overeating, Satiatrim may be what you need to control those hunger pangs, stay fuller longer, and cut your calories naturally which can result in weight loss. I'll be sharing a YouTube video about this stuff later today, but you gotta try it for yourself. Right now, get 20% off plus FREE SHIPPING--and if you enter the coupon code "JIMMY," then you will receive an additional $5 off your order. Give it a try and let me know what you think! :)

Coming up on Thursday's podcast, we'll be talking with Dr. Jeffry Gerber from the Denver, Colorado area. Dr. Gerber is a family doctor who for the past five years has been prescribing a low-carb diet to his patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and a whole host of other medical conditions. He's one of the rare physicians who actually understands the detrimental role of carbohydrate in our diets and will give us hope that other doctors around the nation will soon understand and apply what he knows. DON'T MISS WHAT HE HAS TO SAY!!!

The LLVLC Show #124: Nicki Anderson's Low-Carb Revelation

Nicki Anderson puts some reality back into your fitness routine

In Episode 124 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", I'm pleased to share with you an interview I did with friend and fellow fitness encourager Nicki Anderson from the Napierville, IL-based Reality Fitness. Ever since I first discovered her "Happy Monday" newsletter a little more than two years ago, I have been a BIG FAN of the work Nicki is doing to educate and encourage a healthy lifestyle for the clients at her workout center.

But even more exciting than that is the transformation that is happening to Nicki's philosophy about a healthy diet over the past couple of years that is evident in columns she has written about eating fat here, here, and here. Two prominent low-carb books--Life Without Bread and Good Calories, Bad Calories--along with reading my blog and other online resources has helped transform Nicki's old way of thinking forever.

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 124:

When you've been active in the health industry for as long as Nicki Anderson has, it's difficult not to fall in line with what conventional wisdom has always taught us regarding diet--low-fat, low-calorie, portion control. And yet it is people like her who have chosen to remain open-minded and willing to accept new information based on the science in order to shape and mold what she believes that will kick start the next revolution. Despite the heavy criticism she has received, Nicki remains steadfast in her newfound belief that carbohydrate is at the center of disease and obesity. YEAH!

What do think about someone like Nicki Anderson coming around to the truth about livin' la vida low-carb after years of helping clients with weight loss and exercise? Is this the beginning of a glorious trend that was bound to happen in light of all the overwhelmingly positive data about the healthy low-carb lifestyle? Let's kick it around a bit in the show notes section of Episode 124.

Coming up next week, we have two more exciting interviews to share with you from international author and health activist Phoenix Gilman who wrote a fabulous low-carb fitness book that's in your face entitled Diet Failure...The Naked Truth. You are gonna absolutely ADORE Phoenix and I can't wait to share my interview with her on Monday.

Then on Thursday, we'll be talking with Dr.

The LLVLC Show #123: AmyB Has A Message For Kimkins Supporters

The beautiful and articulate AmyB shares her painful Kimkins story

In Episode 123 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", I'm happy to share with you an exclusive interview with someone who has been at the center of the ongoing Kimkins diet controversy over the past six months since the founder of that company has been outed as a morbidly obese scam artist named Heidi Diaz who has bilked tens of thousands of people with her devious and dangerous dietary advice. Her name is AmyB and she knows all too well about the manipulation that Diaz can inflict on people and was a personal victim of such while she was a member at the Kimkins site. Hear AmyB speak candidly about how she was taken advantage of by "Kimmer" and why she is now one of the most outspoken critics of Kimkins today.

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 123:

It's amazing to hear AmyB talk about Kimkins and Heidi Diaz as she does now with all the innocence and honesty of the entire situation. Even as everyone else was becoming privy to the truth about this increasingly obvious scam (myself included!), she stayed for months afterwards. It wasn't about Heidi, but the people she grew so close to at the Kimkins site that kept her there. Now she's reaching out to them to rescue them from the snares of a delusional woman who is under investigation for fraud. AmyB's message to anyone still at Kimkins: GET OUT NOW!!!

Whether you are engaged in the whole Kimkins debacle or not, what did you think about AmyB's comments? Do you think her concerns about the impact this diet had on her health got her banned by Heidi? Or was it something else that drove this decision by Diaz to suddenly happen? Chat about it and tell us what you think in the show notes section of Episode 123.

Special thanks to Elle from "Grilled Cheese with Pickles" for providing a full transcript of the podcast interview I conducted with AmyB. She volunteered to do that and I am very grateful for her service. You can access this transcript right now by clicking here.

Be sure to tune in again on Thursday when I'll be sharing another interview with a fellow health and weight loss motivator named Nicki Anderson from Reality Fitness who I have talked about before. Nicki's perspective has been radically changed after reading Life Without Bread and Good Calories, Bad Calories over the past year. You're gonna LOVE what she has to share as we enjoyed "meeting" each other during this incredible interview. DON'T MISS IT!!! And thanks so much for listening to "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore."

LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 30): Christine's Great Triglyceride Adventure

Last week I shared with you about my wife Christine's latest physical which found her triglycerides were elevated despite following a lower-carb diet over the past year. She dropped 35 pounds, saw her HDL increase slightly to 57 and her LDL plummet by 50 points to below 100. All in all based on those numbers, she's in excellent health. There's only one problem--her triglycerides are at 297! EEEEEEK!

In Episode 30 of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube," we wanted to bring you up-to-date with this story I started in that blog post last week to let you know how our talk with the registered dietitian went, what plan of action we are taking to help bring those triglycerides way down, and to hear Christine's response to some of the comments that have been left about her health. It's good news because we now have a solid method for treating this rather than lamenting on what was done (or not done!) in the past.

Hear the surprising comments from Christine's dietitian in today's video:

We were kinda shocked to hear this dietitian talking about restricting carbohydrates and choosing good omega-3 fats to help lower triglycerides. YEAH!!! Maybe I've been too hard on dietitians in the past and there are a few diamonds in the rough (kinda like Monica Reinagel). While Christine's dietitian did spout the usual "saturated fat is bad for you" mumbo jumbo, she was dead on about carbs. It's a slow start, but I think the positive impact of livin' la vida low-carb among nutritionists is getting there.

Check out all of our past YouTube videos and don't forget to subscribe to our videos to be the first ones to see 'em when they go LIVE on YouTube. E-mail us your suggestions and comments anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. We LOVE hearing from you, so don't hesitate to write.

The LLVLC Show #122: Nutritionist Monica Reinagel Says Low-Carb Deserves Better

Monica Reinagel laments the dietary monopoly that exists today

In Episode 122 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", we continue with the interview I started on Monday with nutritionist Monica Reinagel from the NutritionData web site as we discuss the low-carb lifestyle and why it is such an important aspect of living healthy despite all the low-fat messages that pervade our society. She wrote a book called The Inflammation-Free Diet Plan and keeps up with all the very latest news in diet and health for the benefit of her readers. She's definitely a friend of the work I am doing and I'm honored to have had the opportunity to interview her at my podcast show.

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 122:

icon for podpress "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 122 [18:22m]: LISTEN NOW | Download

What a great change of pace Monica Reinagel is from the rigidness that you usually hear from nutritionists who think that there is only one right answer as it relates to diet--low-fat. Monica knows better and is open to listening to what the research is saying. Although she laments the inflammatory properties of saturated fat, I'm anxious to see what she thinks about the research I'll be hearing next month at that Nutrition and Metabolism symposium on the healthiness of saturated fat. The good news is she will listen and draw her own conclusions based on the studies that have been done.

2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
3. Subscribing to the RSS feed
4. Going to iTunes--Click here to subscribe!

My interview with Monica Reinagel is finished now, so what is your impression of her and what she had to say? Don't you wish we had dietitians like her all across the nation? The state of weight and health in America would certainly be a whole lot different if more nutritionists would take the Monica Reinagel approach to doing their job. Talk about it in the show notes section of Episode 122.

We've got TWO MORE interviews to share with you next week--coming up on Monday, I'll be sharing an exclusive interview with Amy B about the continuing Kimkins scam that she recently decided to speak out against. It's quite a revealing interview that you WON'T want to miss. Then on Thursday, I'll be sharing an interview with fellow health and weight loss motivator Nicki Anderson from Reality Fitness who I have blogged about a few times before. Despite working in this industry for a very long time, Nicki is realizing just how detrimental carbohydrate is to our weight and health after reading Life Without Bread and Good Calories, Bad Calories in the past year. She's a fun person to hear from and you'll get that opportunity next week. THANKS so much for listening! :)

The LLVLC Show #121: Meet Monica Reinagel, A Nutritionist Who Doesn't Loathe Low-Carb

Nutritionist Monica Reinagel talks openly about low-carb dieting

My history with nutritionists and dietitians while talking about the healthy low-carb lifestyle has not been a very good one. I've had my fair share of run-ins with them here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. Yes, I've had my way of eating poked, prodded, and pranced upon by these self-righteous purveyors of their version of dietary truth for so long I was beginning to wonder if a right-minded thinking nutritionist even existed anymore.

Well, there's at least ONE. :)

In Episode 121 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", we meet licensed nutritionist Monica Reinagel, M.S., C.N.S. who runs an outstanding diet and health blog called NutritionData. She is also the author of the fabulously original health book called The Inflammation-Free Diet Plan which outlines specific foods that are at the root cause of inflammation in the body. She discusses in her book and in my interview with you why you DON'T want inflammation and what foods you can eat which are least likely to be inflammatory (and it might just surprise you!).

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download it to your iPod to hear Episode 121:

icon for podpress "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 121 [24:38m]: LISTEN NOW | Download

Most nutritionists like to check their brain at the door whenever an honest discussion of livin' la vida low-carb ensues. But not Monica Reinagel. She's honest about what the research is showing regarding low-carb diets and quite frankly it is all over the board. Rather than follow what most of her colleagues do in roundly dismissing low-carb diets as a "dangerous fad" with "no long-term proof" that it is healthy, she instead challenges people to do what will work for them in producing weight loss--even that dastardly low-carb lifestyle if it will produce the results for your weight and health. HOW REFRESHING!!!

1. Listening at the official web site
2. Calling (818) 688-2763 to listen via Podlinez
3. Subscribing to the RSS feed
4. Going to iTunes--Click here to subscribe!

Now that you've heard Part 1 of my interview with Monica Reinagel, what did you think? Are you concerned at all about inflammation--arguably one of the hottest health topics being discussed in the medical industry today? Does she make sense with what she's saying or is she just another nutritionist who doesn't get it? You tell me by leaving a comment in the show notes section of Episode 121.

You'll want to listen to Part 2 of my interview with Monica Reinagel on Thursday's edition of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." She's a really neat woman to talk to and I appreciated her willingness to let me do the interview over again a second time after the file from the first one became corrupted. EEEEK! Monica graciously agreed to do it again.

Jimmy Moore To Dean Ornish: I'm Not Buying Your Repackaged Low-Fat Propaganda

Agreement and civility are mutually exclusive of one another

It's been a few weeks since I was given the unique opportunity to speak with low-fat diet guru Dr. Dean Ornish to discuss his new book entitled The Spectrum. Now that all four parts of the interview has been aired on my podcast show, I'd like to offer a postscript expressing my thoughts about what was said during the interview by Dr. Ornish.

Anyone who has not listened to the 100-minute interview, here are the direct links to each segment for your convenience. It's pretty fascinating stuff and quite confrontational at times, so give it a listen if you haven't already done so:

- My Second Interview with Dr. Dean Ornish
- Dean Ornish, Jimmy Moore Debate 'The Spectrum'
- Does Dean Ornish Now Support A Low-Carb Diet?
- Whatever You Do, Don't Call Dean Ornish A Low-Fat Vegetarian

Before I share my opinions about the interview itself, let me give you some background about how this came about. In early 2006, I decided on a whim that I wanted to try to get an interview with Dr. Dean Ornish to talk with him about his dietary philosophy. My modus operandi was nothing more than to hear what the man had to say about what he believes regarding diet, health, and nutrition.

I initiated contact with him through every means I knew to reach Dr. Ornish and was pleasantly surprised to hear back from him within a couple of months about setting up the interview. This was only about a year after I started my blog and many months before I had my own podcast show. In fact, I wasn't even sure how I was gonna record the interview since I didn't have ANY equipment to make it happen.

As it turns out, in the summer of that year Dr. Ornish got married to his wife Anne and our interview was delayed until October. It was a long time coming, but we finally made it happen and you can read all about it with the transcripts of that interview here, here, here, and here and even listen to the raw audio footage I taped using a digital recorder and a speaker phone by clicking here and here. I even wrote this post-interview challenge to Dr. Ornish and low-fat advocates to pursue those areas of common beliefs to help those who struggle with weight and health issues understand some of the basics of what is generally accepted by everyone as healthy.

Fast forward to early 2008 and this time around Dr. Ornish contacted me to see if I'd like to interview him again to talk about his new book. He explained that he wrote The Spectrum because he was inspired by our previous interview and those areas where we agreed. I was excited to hear that this man who had based his entire career on advocating a high-carb, low-fat, vegetarian diet was open to the possibility of finding merit in other nutritional approaches that run counter to what he has always believed. I honestly held out hope that The Spectrum would show progress in the way Dr. Ornish now thought about livin' la vida low-carb.

Unfortunately, that was not to be.

I will give him credit that the ideals espoused in his book are definitely a step forward in attempting to forge some common ground among those who advocate a low-fat or a low-carb diet, but it didn't take long to see that what Dr. Ornish believed was on the healthy end of the "spectrum" of food choices was the same old high-carb, low-fat vegetarian choices and the foods on the least healthy end were the more fatty, meat-based choices. In other words, not much has changed at all!

While our interview was indeed a cordial one because I am not the kind of person who seeks to rip the throat out of someone I am speaking with, I wasn't going to let Dr. Ornish dominate the conversation tee-totally as I did by design with my first interview. This time around I challenged him where I thought we disagreed as he requested upfront before our interview even began. Boy did I ever!

Let me tell you, though, it was quite nauseating for Dr. Ornish to implore a strategy designed to make it seem like we all agreed when in fact we didn't. You'll notice quite often during our interview, he made references like "we all agree" or "we're not in disagreement about" prior to making a point. The first couple of times he did that, I was only casually listening to what he had to say next. But when it became a habitual part of his communication strategy, my ears perked up every single time he did that.

You don't know how tempted I was to say back to him, "Oh, so since we all agree on what a healthy diet looks like, then that must mean you think a high-saturated fat, low-carbohydrate nutritional plan is needed to bring about improvements in weight and health. After all, we're not in disagreement about this at all, are we?" Dr. Ornish would have crapped in his pants if I actually said that and it would have been snarky for me to do so. That said, he KEPT on doing it and I finally had to call his bluff on it. When I did, he seemed to get perturbed with me and contend that I'm making this a "low-carb versus low-fat" thing.

And that's another issue I had with Dr. Ornish during our interview. Every single time I brought up a question about carbohydrate or fat intake, he'd use this excuse that he's not interested in the "diet wars" which he declared as over and done with now. How convenient for you, Dr. Ornish! While you say you no longer want to engage in the macronutrient debate (which is obviously not true as evidenced by this attack by you against the Atkins diet in March 2007), the fact is you have built your entire reputation on the high-carb, low-fat, vegetarian diet. It's what you will always be remembered for--good, bad or ugly.

While it's nice that you finally agree with low-carb advocates that refined carbohydrates are not as healthy as you once believed they were, even that's not entirely true based on your placement of this category of foods in the moderately healthy part of your "spectrum." What's up with that? Sure, you say that if they are eaten by themselves they should be considered among the least healthy, but that caveat is NOT explained in your book. And, I'm sorry, but eating more fiber with those carbohydrates will NOT significantly slow the blood sugar rise and insulin response in the body as you claim. It would send me into a sugar rush tailspin that would take days to recover from!

And that's another issue of contention I had with Dr. Ornish. While I can appreciate his insistence on looking at the data and the science behind what he recommends, it seems he quite conveniently neglects all the preponderance of the evidence that has come out in recent years regarding a high-fat, controlled-carbohydrate dietary approach. Every researcher he cited you'll notice was his "friend." People like Dr. David Ludwig, a low-carb researcher interested in issues involving childhood health (I recently reviewed his fabulous book Ending the Food Fight), are considered by Dr. Ornish to be on his side of the health debate. But something tells me this "friend" he cites would have something to say about being associated with the high-carb, low-fat, vegetarian diet that runs directly counter to what his research is showing him about a healthy diet.

Then, when I mentioned the name of Gary Taubes and his brilliant book Good Calories, Bad Calories, you would have thought I had just cursed his grandmother! Oh the vitriol that came out of Dr. Ornish's mouth about Gary Taubes was enough to see exactly who he is and what he's about. It very clearly showed me he was uninterested in the evidence and simply stuck on his own monopolistic viewpoints.

When I asked if he had read the Taubes book, you'll notice Dr. Ornish never really answered that question. He said it was on his desk, but that doesn't mean he read it. The disrespect he showed Gary Taubes by claiming he was "just a journalist" put his snobby, elitist attitude on full display for everyone to see. So, does it disqualify Gary Taubes from conducting over six years of research with 150 pages of references in his book because he's not a researcher with an MD or PhD behind his name, Dr. Ornish?

I think not.

I don't have those credentials either, Dr. Ornish, so why would you waste your time on a nothing blogger like me since obviously you look at me in a similar light as you do Gary Taubes? This is why low-carb supporters continue to be skeptical of any changes in you, Dr. Ornish--we don't see any evidence that you're different in either your message or the manner in which you communicate it. It's just more and more of the same old stuff that's been repackaged to seem different. But it's not.

Then there's the issue of people like me who have been highly successful at losing weight on a diet that runs absolutely opposite of what Dr. Ornish has been promoting his whole life. When I asked him about that, he skirted the question rather quickly and moved into talking about all his research about low-fat diets again. Ummm, that wasn't the question, sir. HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN JIMMY MOORE and others who have been successful at not just losing weight on low-carb, but keeping it off over the long-term? It's not a difficult question to answer and I'd STILL love to hear what he has to say about it.

Dr. Dean Ornish is very good at creating diversions from the difficult questions. If he wasn't involved in the health industry, then I'm sure one of the major political parties would LOVE to have him run for office since he can wiggle and maneuver his way out of all the tight circumstances. It's no doubt something he has to do nowadays in light of all the evidence that keeps pouring in from the research community shooting down every single theory he has ever held about a healthy diet.

That's fine that he declares his diet is the only one to be proven to "reverse heart disease" but I'm not buying it. To state as you have your entire career that the healthiest way to eat is a high-carb, low-fat, vegetarian diet is not only false, but completely misleading to a nation full of people who deserve better than that, Dr. Ornish. There should be just as much emphasis on the negative role of carbohydrate in your "spectrum" and not just the refined carbs. Even some whole grains are detrimental to the health of those who are especially insulin resistant--and it's a lot more people than you're willing to admit are out there, my friend.

I'm sure this blog post will be reason enough for Dean Ornish to never want to do another interview with me again, but that's no concern for me right now. I had to speak the truth and the truth is I couldn't remain silent about the continued lies he is sharing with people about his failed dietary philosophy. Get with the times already, Dr. Ornish. Whether you like it or not, livin' la vida low-carb IS mainstream now and here to stay. It's not low-carb versus low-fat--it's what works for the individual. Your refusal to even acknowledge that a low-carb program will work for some gets to the very heart of the matter.

Even I am the first to admit that low-carb will not work for everyone, but it's an option that should at least be promoted by health groups and tried by people who have struggled on a high-carb, low-fat diet as I did for most of my life before going on the Atkins diet in 2004. My mantra is for people to find the proven and effective plan that works for them, follow that plan exactly as prescribed by the author, and then keep doing that plan for the rest of their life. If that's an Ornish-styled low-fat diet, then I say GO FOR IT. But if it's an Atkins-styled low-carb diet, then that should be something you should openly encourage people to follow, too.

Now that's something we ALL agree about anyway, right Dr. Ornish?

The LLVLC Show #120: Meet NFL Great Mark Schlereth Talking Low-Carb Living

NFL athlete, ESPN analyst, and soap opera star Mark Schlereth

One of my regular readers recently pointed me to this Denver Post column about a former NFL player who was able to shed the pounds by livin' la vida low-carb. It turns out 3-time Super Bowl winner and former All-Pro offensive lineman for the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos Mark Schlereth trimmed down from his 300-pound playing days in the National Football League by implementing a controlled-carbohydrate nutritional approach. When I heard about this, I KNEW I had to interview Mark. To my delight, he agreed!

In Episode 120 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", we hear from Mark Schlereth describing his post-NFL diet and exercise regimen, the struggle he had maintaining the weight requirements placed on him by constantly eating, how he has transitioned his life to focus more on his television career and family, and his ideas for some non-football books that he's been working on. Mark Schlereth always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Winning three Super Bowls with two different teams, turning down a 6-year, $42 million contract extension to retire from the NFL only to be given an immediate opportunity to become a football analyst for ESPN, getting noticed by the producers of the daytime soap opera Guiding Light to wiggle his way into a reluctant acting career, and so much more. Life is good for this former offensive lineman who had 29 surgeries during his NFL career, mostly on his knees. Now he sees what is most important and pursues those things. In other words, there's more to life than football. How refreshing!

Check out these outtake bloopers from Mark playing Roc Hoover on Guiding Light:

You'll want to listen to "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" next week as I present a special two-part interview on Monday and Thursday with a nutritionist who actually supports the tenets of the healthy low-carb lifestyle! Yes, it's rare these days, but you can find a few independent-thinking minds who are brave enough to admit that low-carb living indeed works for some people very well and should be implemented. Don't miss that interview!

We've got LOTS more interviews coming up for you in the coming weeks from a former Kimkins member who wants to share her concerns about Heidi Diaz, a fitness guru who only recently discovered the carbohydrate connection to obesity and disease, a previous contestant on "The Biggest Loser" weight loss reality show on NBC-TV, and the author of a book who clearly understands the unique insulin connection in the weight loss and health problems that plagued our society. All this and so much more to come in the next few months! THANKS for listening!

The LLVLC Show #119: The Message Of Mickey D's Is BUY ME!

Don't doubt the massive power that McDonald's holds over kids

When you think about the most famous brands in the entire world that are almost universally recognized by virtually everyone who sees them, one particular brand rises to the very top--MCDONALD'S! There's no denying the saturation of the Golden Arches in the marketplace today, but there's scientific evidence now that shows this influence goes much deeper than mere recognition especially among children.

In Episode 119 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", I highlight a study published in August 2007 that found children preferred food that was wrapped in paper with the McDonald's logo on it compared to the exact same food appearing in plain paper wrapping. It's an absolutely astonishing discovery and further solidifies the argument that many are making that McDonald's has a responsibility to encourage healthier food options for its young customer base.

McDonald's is a modern-day cultural phenomenon. No other business can claim such a strong foothold on the children of this world (except for maybe Disney, but that's debatable!). And with that great power there should be a responsibility to do something effective with it while still maintaining a profitable business model. The two are not mutually exclusive and offering healthy alternatives at the most famous fast food restaurant in the world is not an unreasonable request. And don't tell me they already do offer "healthy" choices because sugary salads and HFCS-infested caramel apple dippers don't count!

Creating the R Gym concept was a good start on the fitness end of things and so was donating $2 million to childhood obesity research. But those are merely window dressing on a problem that runs deeper than even McDonald's is willing to admit. Fast food makes you fatter--DUH! And yet representatives with the company want to claim eating the food at Mickey D's is part of a "balanced" diet. As John Stossel would say, give me a break!

What do you make of this study revealing the marketing prowess of a company like McDonald's? Do you think they should use their popularity among the kids to begin educating and offering better food choices? Or it is perfectly fine for them to continue peddling burgers, French fries and milkshakes to serve the needs of their "growing" customer base? Talk about it in the show notes section of Episode 119 and let us know what YOU think!

The LLVLC Show #118: Bidding A Fond Farewell To Dr. Dean Ornish

Dr. Dean Ornish continues discussing his new book The Spectrum

Today is the fourth and final segment of my interview with low-fat diet activist Dr. Dean Ornish discussing the concepts in his new book The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health. In case you missed any of the previous three podcasts featuring the first three parts of my interview with Dr. Ornish, then you can listen to Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 right now.

In Episode 118 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", Dr. Ornish and I talk about his diet philosophy where he gets rather angry at me for suggesting that his dietary recommendations are a low-fat, high-carb diet. He repeated asked me to stop characterizing his work as a "low-fat" diet and that he's tired of compartmentalizing the dietary debate as "low-fat vs. low-carb." I couldn't agree more, although the totality of what he wrote in his book is overwhelmingly a low-fat, vegetarian diet. The truth hurts, Dr. Ornish!

You'll notice very quickly in this episode that Dr. Ornish was getting a bit testy and didn't appreciate the questions I was asking him. It was as if he was hoping for another breeze of an interview like the one we did back in October 2006. Nope, not this time. I had to call his bluff when I believed he was wrong, although Dr. Ornish insisted that we don't disagree on many points. That was a clever tactic he kept using, but I wasn't buying it and neither was anyone listening.

I'll be expounding on my post-interview thoughts in a blog post very soon, but for now let's just say it was good to see that we at least could come together to talk about a very real difference ideas without resorting to needless name calling or disparaging remarks. You could tell at the conclusion of the interview that Dr. Ornish appreciates the work I am doing and acknowledged it as much in his closing remarks. I appreciate and respect that he sees the positive of what I do despite his disagreements with what I share.

My interview with Dr. Dean Ornish is finished now, so please share your comments in the show notes section of Part 4 in Episode 118 to compile what you think about Dr. Ornish and his new book The Spectrum. Was there anything I forgot to ask him about? What did you like best about the interview? Is there anything I could have done to make it even better? Please share your thoughts!

As I previously stated, I will be writing a blog post in the next few days with my thoughts about this Ornish interview. I certainly give him credit for being willing to speak with somebody like me because he didn't have to talk to me at all. But he came to me requesting the interview and I was grateful for the opportunity to share about his new book and his attempt to continue forging that "common ground" with low-carbers. Although he's still got a long way to go, it's an important first step.

We'll be keeping the lines of communication open for future opportunities to interview Dr. Dean Ornish and any other low-fat diet supporters who want to appear on my podcast show. Hopefully I've shown that we can disagree without being disagreeable and that an open and honest debate of ideas is always welcomed for better understanding of diet, health and nutrition. THANKS for listening and we'll be back again on Monday with another episode of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore."

LLVLC On YouTube (Episode 28): An Inside Look At The 2008 HPBA Expo

Christine and I attended the 2008 HPBA Expo in Atlanta, Georgia!

We must have been completely crazy coming back from our five-day Mexican cruise last Thursday to go straight to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue (HPBA) Expo in Atlanta, Georgia. But that's what Christine and I did on Friday and Saturday walking for miles upon miles looking at fireplaces, grills, BBQ accessories, and more! It was a lot of fun and we captured some of our favorite moments on camera for our latest YouTube video.

In Episode 28 of "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb On YouTube," I took my tried and trusted FLIP camera out and filmed Christine as we went from booth to booth at the HPBA Expo. Yes, it was a lot of walking after a tiring week of cruising, but I made some good contacts there with companies that may be willing to donate some really amazing prizes for my upcoming 3rd blogiversary giveaway contest in April. More to come about that!

See for yourself what the HPBA Expo is all about in today's video:

We were very fortunate to catch up with Michael Wales, the inventor of the Grill Daddy grill cleaner which I featured in Episode 27. He was gracious enough to offer a FREE Grill Daddy Pro to one lucky winner who leaves a comment at YouTube about this video. If your grill stays dirty and gunky, then this would be a cool prize to win. Special THANKS to Michael for his generous prize donation. :)

While we were filming, we also met up with Karen Adler from Pig Out Publications who I interviewed last year for my podcast show. The "BBQ Queen" also has a new book entitled BBQ Bash: The Be-All, End-All Party Guide, from Barefoot to Black Tie which will be available for purchase next month! She says it's full of GREAT low-carb recipes, too!

We also hooked up with Steven Raichlen who will be coming back to television in May 2008 with a brand new series about--what else?--BBQ, baby! Steven was leaving as we passed by the booth, so we didn't get him on camera, but you will notice he has a full line of amazing BBQ accessories for anything you will do with your grill. Amazing products!

There was so much to look at and see at the 2008 HPBA Expo that we will probably plan on going back again next year to Reno, Nevada for another great show! Have you ever seen so many grills and stuff in your life all in one place? Talk about what you thought about the video and don't forget to leave your comment for a chance to win a FREE Grill Daddy Pro. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

Catch up on all the latest in our YouTube video series and subscribe to our videos to always see the new ones. We have well over 300 subscribers now and over 9,000 people have viewed our videos. THANK YOU for your support! As always, e-mail your show suggestions and comments to us anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. We LOVE hearing from our viewers!

I REALLY wanted to take some video footage while we were on our cruise and attempted to do so once. But the batteries died right in the middle of the filming and I just put it away for the rest of the trip. Oh well, maybe next year! It's a good thing, too, because there's no video of me cracking my head open after singing karaoke. I don't know which was funnier-watching me rap a Run DMC song or seeing me walking smack dab into a TV stand? LOL! At least I've got a memory of my 2008 cruise. :P

The LLVLC Show #117: Dr. Dean Ornish And 'The Spectrum' (Part 3)

Dr. Dean Ornish continues discussing his new book The Spectrum

We pick up with Part 3 of my four-part interview with low-fat diet activist Dr. Dean Ornish today talking about his new book The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health (Click here to listen to Part 1 and Part 2). In Episode 117 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", Dr. Ornish shares why he believes the theories espoused by people like Gary Taubes (author of Good Calories, Bad Calories) are foolish and irrelevant, why HDL cholesterol is not as good as we think it is, and how taking a few moments to reflect on life in the quiet moments of the day is just as important to health as what you eat.

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download Part 3 to your iPod to hear Episode 117:

icon for podpress "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" Episode 117 [29:59m]: LISTEN NOW | Download

Although I treated Dr. Ornish with nothing but respect, you'll notice I openly challenged him at times about what he believes and why he believes it. So when I asked him point blank if he supports the idea that people should find the plan that works for them, follow that plan exactly as prescribed, and then keep doing that plan for the rest of their life, Dr. Ornish replied that he agrees a customized program for the individual is indeed the approach he supports with The Spectrum. Ergo, you can say that he now has shown support for a low-carb diet, right? Because we all agree a low-carb diet is a healthy one, right Dr. Ornish? THANKS for agreeing with us finally.

With only one more segment to go in my four-part interview with Dr. Dean Ornish, please leave your remarks in the show notes section of Part 3 in Episode 117 and let us know what you think about Dr. Ornish and his new book The Spectrum. Are you buying anything he has to say so far? Has his recommendations evolved at all from his radical high-carb, low-fat diet dogma from the past three decades?

Be sure you tune in on Thursday for Part 4 of my interview with Dr. Dean Ornish at "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore." When the podcast has finished, I'll probably write a blog post with my afterthoughts of this interview like I did with my previous interview with Dr. Ornish. I've got a whole lot to say about this one as you can imagine!

The LLVLC Show #115 & 116: Dr. Dean Ornish And 'The Spectrum' (Part 1 & 2)

Dr. Dean Ornish talks with me about his new book The Spectrum

Before I left for vacation last weekend, I teased you when I revealed there would be a special 4-part interview with someone in the realm of diet, health and nutrition beginning this past week and continuing into next week. Now that I'm back, I guess you've discovered who it was already--low-fat diet advocate Dr. Dean Ornish. He contacted me about a month ago and asked if I would like to interview him again about his new book entitled The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health. As my regular readers will recall, that previous 4-part interview in October 2006 was pretty much an open invitation for Dr. Ornish to share what he believes without any challenge whatsoever. Listen to Part 1 and Part 2 of that interview to hear what he had to say.

But in Episode 115 and Episode 116 of "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore", you'll notice a decidedly different tone this time around by design. Even Dr. Ornish requested me to feel free to challenge and question him on areas where we disagreed. And boy did I ever! Although Dr. Ornish continually tried to say we agreed with each other about various concepts, it was very evident that we clearly DO NOT agree as much as he thinks. You'll hear the frustration in my voice when he claims "we all agree" on this and that when we obviously don't. The back and forth exchange was fiery at times, but that sure makes for an entertaining podcast interview to listen to, though! :D

Click on the "LISTEN NOW" link below or download Part 1 to your iPod to hear Episode 115:

Dr. Dean Ornish is very polished in his presentation of what he believes about a healthy diet. The only problem is he is so deep into his own philosophical views and talking points that he forgets to answer the questions that are presented to him in black and white. Several times I asked him questions that merited a direct answer and he breezed right over them with something tee-totally different. Why is that? Is it so difficult to give a direct answer to a direct question, Dr. Ornish?

We've got two more segments of my 100-minute interview with Dr. Dean Ornish, but tell us what you think about what you've heard so far. Leave your comments in the show notes section of Part 1 in Episode 115 as well as Part 2 in Episode 116 to share your thoughts about what you have heard from Dr. Ornish and his new book The Spectrum.

Incidentally, here is the breakdown of the five groups in The Spectrum from "most healthy" to "least healthy" according to Dr. Ornish (I OBVIOUSLY disagree with his definition of "healthy" and categorization of what that constitutes):

Group 1
These are the most healthful foods, predominantly fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nonfat dairy, and egg whites in their natural forms, as well as some good fats that contain omega‑3 fatty acids.

Group 2
These are also predominantly plant-based but somewhat higher in fat (predominantly monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat) such as avocados, seeds, nuts. Oils are included but in small amounts, since they are so dense in calories. Group 2 also includes foods canned in water (rather than sugary syrup or oil), canned vegetables (if sodium is not too high), low-fat dairy products (1%), decaffeinated beverages, low-sodium soy sauce, and so on.

Group 3
These foods include some seafood, some refined carbohydrates (Dr. Ornish has an interesting explanation in Part 2 of my interview about why these were not listed in Group 5) and concentrated sweeteners (in moderation), some oils that are higher in saturated fat, some reduced fat (2%) dairy products, margarines free of trans fatty acids, sweeteners containing high fructose corn syrup, and higher sodium.

Group 4
In this group foods contain additional fat, higher animal protein and fewer protective nutrients. These include poultry, fish that are higher in mercury, whole milk/dairy products, margarine, mayonnaise, pastries, cakes, cookies, and pies.

Group 5
In general, these foods are considered the least healthful. They are the lowest in protective substances and are highest in “bad fats.” Some food included in this group are red meat, egg yolks, fried poultry, fried fish, hot dogs, organ meats, butter, cream, and tropical oils like coconut oil.

UGH! As you can see, he's just about got the Groups backwards! When you see that refined carbohydrates are middle of the road "healthy" and egg yolks, butter and coconut oil are considered "least healthy," then you know we have a very clear difference of opinion regarding what is healthy and what is not. Keep listening to the rest of the interview to hear more about why Dr. Ornish thinks The Spectrum is far superior to anything he has ever written about nutrition before and why I think it is nothing more than the same old, same old we've always heard from him. I'll let YOU decide who to believe after listening to the final two segments of the interview on "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.".
